COAL DISCHARGING PLANT. The Union Company’s' coal discharging plant erected at the extreme end of the Gladstone Pier was put into commission yesterday morning for the first time in discharging the Korom.iko’s cargo of coal from Newcastle. All who saw the plant in action were surprised with its speed. Though it is a new machine* and the workmen are not yet familiar with its use, the plant discharged coal at tin* rate of 240 tons iper hour with its two-ton grab. When in full working order it • trill be able to discharge up to 3(j)0 tons per hour. Tho grab discharges two tons each 1 ifu into a. bin and out of this bin the coal is released into trucks. It is possible to fill the trucks as they are moving along at a slow rate. Tt will ensure a, quick dispatch of colliers. WEST LYTTELTON SCHOOL.
