ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE.
ANNUAL DISPLAY The third annual display and concert of tho St. Andrew's - College was-given on Saturday evening (n the college gymnasium before a very large attendance. The scholars showed the results of careful training in all i heir items, which included singiDg, gymnastic displays by-seniors ami juniors, selections by the orchestra, and a. violin solo. Several encores had to be given during the evening, nnd a very fine entertainment. was brought to a close with the singing of the. student song. “ Gaudeamus hr the senior school. The accompanists were Mrs A. K. Anderson. Mrs M. May tie. Miss A. Penfold and Mr S. O. Thrower.
The display opened with the well-known Harrow song. ” Forty Years On." which was sung by the whole school. The school orchestra then gave a fine rendering of "Palais do Danse" (Horne), which was followed bv the chorus ‘‘Youth" I All itThe bugle baud of the college, under the baton of Mr Thom, delighted those presemwith two selection*. " Bello IN alt-z ’ N\"a Idt.eufel) and " starlight March" (Balfour). A short hut none tho less appreciated gymnastic display was given by the junior squad, who went through a. series of free exercises. After the junior choristers had sung “ See Our Oars " (Stevenson). Russell Corderv showed considerable talent in the playing of " Kuyawiak " (Wieniawski). A number of dumb-bell exercises were capably gone through by a squad of intermediate gymnasts, arid this was followed bv the fife band item. ** Cock o' the North." The volume of sound would have filled a much larger hall, but the air was well played. The orchestra, was at ite best in a tuneful rendering of " Oriental Moon." The junior choristers and the senior singing class combined well in " Kings of the Road " (Sevan) and a number of the senior boys gave a faultless display of parallel bar exercises. Master F. Bull pleased the audience with a piano, forte solo. " Nocturne in G Minor '* (Chopin), and then another gymnastic display with wands wa* given by the senior squad- The junior singing class sang. "J n This Hour of Softened Splendour " (PinRuti). this item being followed, by a selection on the bagpipes by the pipe band. Mr S. Thrower. L.A.8.. was heard to advantage in a pianoforte solo. " Allegro " from “ Sixth Rhapsody ” (Liszt). Tt is by no means an easy piece to play, but Mr Thrower was very convincing. He had to respond to an encore. Two more displays by members of the gymnasium, an orchestral number, and the “ Smugglers’ Bong *• (Mulliner) by the choristers and senior singing clasp completed a very fine evening’s entertainment.
