CHRISTCHURCH. TO-DAY’S CASES. (Before Mr H Y. Widdowsoti. S.M ; D RT' N KEN NESS. George Kelly M’Kcny.ie. a second offender, was fined 20s, in default three days’ imprisonment. ESCAPE FROM HOME. Eva May Williams, alias William son, alias Elsie Dvnn, alias Mrs Bramelow (Mr R. Twyneham) pleaded guilty to a charge of escaping from the Salvo lion Army Homo. Sub-inspector Simpson said the accused was convicted for soliciting and ordered to stay in the Home on November 23 for one year, but on December 1 she escaped and went to her husband at Avoca, where she was arrested on Saturday Mr Twyneham said that the accused refused to stay in the Salvation Army Home and she was apparently under the impression that she could walk o'r. when she liked. She had n sister from Tasman .a visiting New Zealand, and she was prepared to ' take *er away and give her a new start. Drink was her trouble, and she had a bad* list, but if she were allowed to »ro away it would probably do good for her.

Robinson, a taxi driver, by a verbal fraudulent representation to obtain thereby the benefit of a taxi ride from Christchurch to An not valued at £O. The accused pleaded guilty, and elected to be dealt with by the Magistrate.

Senior-Detective Gibson said that during Carnival Week the accused got Robinson to drive him to Sheffield and kept him there two nights. When the time for paying up came the accused wrote out a cheque, and told Robinson to drive him down to the hank. The cheque was a valueless one and while Robinson was inside trying to cn?*h it the accused got awav “This kind of offence is getting too common.” said Detective Gibson.

The accused’s list was read, and it showed that he had a number of convictions for false pretences and issuing valueless cheques. Gresson) at the Rangiora saleyards on December 7. was fined 40s and costs. An application to have defendant bound over to keep the peace was dismissed.

In the Juvenile Court, for being in possession of a .22 calibre rifle, a bov fifteen years of age was convicted, and an order was made for the confiscation of the weapon.
