BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night; present— The Deputy-Mayor (Mr C. I. Jennings), Councillors A. H. Tvler, C. R Thwaitea, C. S. Ayers, H. A. Archdall, W. Allison. R. M’lntosh and W. A. Rouse. An apology was made for tho absence of tho Mayor (Mr W. A Banks), who is in Auckland, and leave of absence for two months was granted Councillor W. L. Murray on account of ill-health, and sympathy with him was expressed. The Finance Committee reported the receipts for October to have been £706 8s lid. and payments £ll7B Ss sd. The debit balance at the end of the mouth was £1314 lls 7d, as compared with £3435 2s 3d at the same date last year. Accounts for £507 15s 9d were recommended for payment-. The purchase of a recording electric meter for the Soutlihrook sub-station at a cost of £94, provided the meter at present in use could be sold for £4O, was recommended ; also that a grant of £35 be made to the fire brigade for the current year. The report was adopted. The Works Committee recommended that information be obtained from engineers as to the cost of a new boiler for the fire engine. In order to relieve the excessive surface drainage carried by the King kStreet water channels the committee had decided to nut in a half pine culvert across High Street, at the intersection of White Street, to carry the surface drainage in tho vicinity to lower White Street. It had also been decided to replace the nresent wooden culvert at lhe intersection of Payne Street and Ashley Street with % half pine concrete culvert. Work was in hand to remedy a nuisance caused by stagnant water in the railway drain at the Hight Street crossing. The report was adopted. The Reserves Committee, in its report, recommended that tenders be ini vited for re-covering the roof of the Institute Hall with corrugated iron or poilite ; also, that tenders he cplkH for lea sin jr the hall. For the corresponding month last year the figures were 46 tons, average 12 682 cubic feet of gas per ton. The sales of electricity amounted to £136 IVs tid, as against £llß L4s in tor the corresponding month last year. Permits for the erection of nuiuuugs and alterations to the value of £ll/4 10s were granted. On race uay eleven taxi license fees ol £1 each were collected, making the total passenger vehicle licenses issued this year 31. This was the largest number of licenses issued in any one year. Amendments of by-laws would be considered shortly, and he suggested that provision should be made for prohibiting traction engine traffic on the asphalted portion of Higli Street. The report was adopted The Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club wrote asking if the council would he willing to grant the use of the old gravel pit reserve' adjoining the club’s ground for the purpose of putting down 4 tennis courts, or a bowling green, and if so upon what terms. It was decided to ask the executive of the club to meet the councillors on the ground to discuss the matter. A letter was received from Mrs L. E. TVetherell stating that in consequence of road gradings having been left lying in front of her gate on the evening of September 20 she had a bad fall, causing severe injury to her wrist, and she claimed the sum of £3 10s medical expenses.
