. CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL. KARAITIANA DEFEATS KETT. | The final of the Canterbury amateur ! championship was* played last evening | at the Tramway Club, between \V. Kert ! (Working Men's Club) aud W. Karaitiana ! (Kaiapoi Working Men s Club). There was a large number of spectators, and the j table was in first-class coudition. Both men started very cautiously, and | small runs of seven and ten were frequent. Kett appeared to be well set for a good break when the scores stood at I 11 uIL but be broke down at, a very loser "off the w hite, and let Karaitiana in, who, however, could not got the balls 1 to run properly, and the scores mounted | very slowly. He marked up a neat 2?, j followed by a 14. and the scores read: — | Karaitiana 250. Kett 225. A further small item of 15 by Kett saw Karaitiana’s leal i reduced to 12. Kett terminated a determined uphill fight by scoring 36 at his next visit and taking the lead at 258 252. Kett supplemented this with an 18, but Karatiana nullified this with a 20. all off the red. Kett was the first to score his 300. reaching that mark when - . his opponent was 269. He further increased bis lead with a well-played 20, eventually This gave him a lead of fifty over Karnitiaha. who was experiencing a period of hard lurk. ' A spell of quiet play folio-w----ed, neitflier player making any runs of note. Karaitiana was the first to get going, and after scoring a 23 he got poslj tion and looked like making a big break, i but lie broke down early. His next effort 1 o<' 32. however, gave him the lead at 415- ■ 390. Kett . kept within striking distance j of bis opponent, until Karaitiana nut on h 19. Kett then steadily lost ground, and | when he was 426 Karaitiana. was 453- ! 17 bringing him to within five of uis opponent. ’Karaitiana considerably bettered his position with an 18, and in the ! following hand went to his points with 12 • unfinished.
