Captain James Mac-far lane, of Devonport, who celebrated hi.s ninety-second birthday last week, came to the dominion in 1.863 in command of the City of Dunedin, which used both sail and steam. He was one of the founders of the Union Company, being closely connected with Sir James .Mills and Mr John Darling. He went Home and brought out the Taupo, and later he supervised the building of the Rotorua, which he brought out and opened up trade between Sydney and New Zealand. He eventually sold his interest in the Union Company, and for twelve yeans was harbour-master at Dunedin. Captain Macfarlane, despite hi.s years, is still very active.
