NOTES AND COMMENTS. The visit of the Australian team to the South Island has been left till very late in the season, but this was unavoidable, owing to the Sydney firstgrade competition being drawn out. Unfortunately it has been found necessary to allot a mid-week match to and this will c-auso disappointment with followers who have the .Saturday half-holiday. The original intention was that the game should bo played on the first Saturday in Octobei', hut it was pointed out that, this date would clash with the benefit trotting: fixture arranged in aid of the Lewisham Hospital fund. Some faulty administrntioii seems to have occurred when the tour was arranged and nt the outset it was sug gested that, on account, of the latercas in the season, the visit should be cancelled, but us the Auckland season benefited, it was decided to carry on. Tiie Sydenham and Avon Clubs will hold their auual reunions* on Saturday rext. The Kaiapoi third-grade team left for Auckland on Thursday, and play at the northern city to-day. The Lin wood fifth-grade were booked to go to Auckland, but unfortunately accommodation was not forthccoming, r.nd the cancelling of the trip was a big disappointment to tho eastern suburbs youths. The Federal senior team were entertained bv their president. Air T. Beek-efi-Piko last week. The Auckland papers refer to the first fixture of the Aussies as a brilliant exhibition of football, with F. Burge thining iri the scoring. The New South Wales critics give Burge the credit or being the hext Rugb.v forward that lia<s ever donned an Australian jersey. The proposed visit of the Ausaies to Dunedin is giving satisfaction to local ft Honors of the code. It is stated that the League game will be played in the. sou thorn oitv next season. The Wools ton Club wound up the sei son with a successful reunion on Saturday. The. decision of the executive to award the trophy donated by a supporter to the player or coach who developed a team to the hest standard of the gunie. to Mr Clegg, of the Sydenham fourth gro.jlc team, will be favourably received. The south suburbs youths played fine football throughout th° o’-suson and hold an unbeaten record. The Australian team were accorded a civic reception by the Mayor of Auckland, and in reply Mr FI. Flegg denied tho reports that the players were professionals. It is rejKirtcd that the AuatralasianKangaroos fixture will be played at the Show Grounds. A meeting of the Referees’ Association will be held on Wednesday evening. when Mr Stevens will report on the recent; referees’ conference. IT. Horder, who hi scoring freely for the Australians in tho North Island, is the best three-quarter in the Rugby world to-dav and rome of the Sydnev critics credit him with being the greatest three-quarter tho game has known. Iu England with The Kangaroos laeb season tho brilliant North Sydnev wing gave some fine exhibitions. Ho has ■cored two hundred points this season in club and Interstate- fixtures, and probably has already established a World’s record, which he will add to considerably before the born* is finished. F. Burge has scored over fifty points ; In club and representative matches thi* ; season. The versatile Glebe forward him the faculty of anticipating movements in tho game and this gains him many tries.
