An exceptionally good list, of noimun i ions b«e» been received for the Dene'it Trotting meeting, to b© held at Addington on October 7, in aid ot the Lewisham Hospital, there- being an average of twenty-two horses for each of the .seven races. Tho principal event, ooiiGbcd to horses with engage»n**nte m tho New Zealand Trotting ( up, hap attracted a field of twelve, and the race should provide an excellent opportunity for owners to M re their eracks a spin in public at a convenient interval before the date of the big content. All the other events hare been well patronised by local owuers. The ex-Sydney trainer. W. J Tomhinson, lias nine of hi» team engaged, so he is likely to have a busy day. Altogether, the meeting promises to be a great succcsa, and it is <ertain that the hospital funds will tcceivc a big contribution as a result of this effort. J. Messervey, juu., has relinquished his position as. trainer to TV (J. Haskins, and in future he will handle tlte hors***© of Messrs A. Rattray and J Bryan. Whispering Willie is going on nicely in bis preparation, and the little trotter should get into tho money in some of the big cveuto at Addington in November. Lor-unda Dillon is stepping out freoly in his work. He raced disappointingly last- month, hut he should do a lot better in November, where he will take pari in the New Zeal a no ‘J’rotting Cup and other leading races. Mr ft. A. Knight’s fwo-voar-01l Ballymena, by Nassau—Medley, is racing very consistently in the North Island, having finished third in each of hi® two start.-'. He oppears to suffer of brilliancy from the barrier, hot his experience in the North Island should assist- him when he returns to the South Island, w here tho M ’Leu i Stakes may be hi* first race. Para, winner of a fcoren furlong hack race at Otaki on Saturday, ig a three-year-old sister to Wambn, by Absurd from Cintra. She is a stable mate of Enthusiasm, and she has the reputation ot being a useful galloper. JCrCollcnt- time- was observed at the Aehburton mating last week. The competitors in the Pare well Handicap on Saturday were held at the post for a otiplc of minutes after the totalisator hod been balanced, waiting for the official btorting time. The judicial stewards of the Ashburton Country Racing Club nold .m inquiry on Saturday into the accident on tho previous clay, when Unio fell oud broke his shoulder while taking part it the Allenton Hack Handicap. Tile evidence showed that The Reaver "as bumped on to T'nio, but eg the steward* could not discover who was the ca»»9 of the trouble, it wag decided to take no further action. ASHBURTON RACES. SECOND DAY. The spring mooting of the Ashburton County Racing Club was concluded on Saturday, in fine weather, and with an attendance equalling that of the previous day. The fields were not ijuite so large, most of the first day's vinnors being abseut, but the sport * as again full of interest. There w as drop in the tot-aiisator investments, •»roour»tmg to £5211 for the two days. Tp, other respects, however, it was a very successful ifioeting The secretary, Me A A. Fooks, had all tho details we!! in hand,, .and the other officials discharged their duties very capably. A noticeable feature was tho punctuality that was observed, the new tarter, Mr I*. D. M’Nab, having to fiofd the competitor*, ip. the Farewell ttandicaj?. tho oopcludifig event oft Saturday. ?<rr a couple of after the totalizator okw»th waiting for the schedule starting time, when he concluded sotton good work with an ideal dispatch. JPmcetadin&M o»je*ad with tb# R-uk*ra FJHUMiIr Maodft-ap, whisb attracted ais runner*?. in spite of a r.ise to 12st 81b, Faibtatf was a warm favourite, wfflfi Likelihood second choice. Cerberus, who had not figured among the hurdlers on the firkt day, took -rharge at the start. Bellrock joined hi-an at the end of two fur long*, where Falsiaff was steadied. The leading pair opened up a big gap going down the back, but Cerbkriis held his rival

and he went on to win easily from j FaltafT. who finished with a strong ! run. Manama was close up. and then ' came Bellrock. lakeliliood and .Mandrake. Tho winner’s performance was very attractive. He has not had much experience over hurdles but he is a speedy customer, who jumps smartly. Some ot his form on the flat has suggested that he wa.c not fond of racing, and if lie can only be induced to race generously over hurdles he is likely to win lots of racesFalstnff added to his reputation by a fine effort, and he might havN- given the winner even more trouble had be been kept a little closer up in the early stages. Mavarna shaped well, and there still spems good hope, for him ae a hurdler. Likelihood raced disappointingly, as h° never looked like catching the two leaders. The scratohinjr of Dame Straitlac© loft a field of twelve for the Fairfield Hack Handicap. Ardour was a whkh favourite. Headlong and Warbue being the only others hacked with much spirit. Balefire and Frisco Mail led Dianella and Ardour from the barrier, with Warhue handy. There was no change till they reached tho straight, where Ardour went on to win easily from Dianella. who heat Warbue hv u head, with First Aid. Balefire Frisco Mail dose up. Ardour is the first winner sired by Day Lad. nn.d she is a really good advertisement for the imported horse, who seems likely to make a. name at the stud. It is plearing to know that he is getting every’ chance from breed<'r*. Ardour can go fast and she should stay fairly well. Dianella ran out the journey well and she should pay her way, though sho may never be more than useful. M AVhtie ran a Round race, hut ho will have to improve a. hit yet if he is to win in good company. F>oniform was prominent, a hundred yard? from home, hut could not sustain his effort. Headlong was never seen, while Tforatius settled his ebane© hv off badly. Balefire showed up in thr> front lot most of the way and ho p U |lod up v ,ell. an improvement on his performance of the first day. when he broke a blood vessel.

of speed, and :-h.e should win more races this ‘reason, though her track form suggests tuart she may always be at her best as a sprinter. Happy Warrior is a promising sort hv Kilbroney, and his winning turn should come very soon. Gonurus was badly plaee-d in the | early stages, but he finished well, as I did Bandolero and Warseor, and iheso j three may do better shortly. A field of eight lined up for tho j Coldstream Welter Handicap. Som j Kid was rather better backed than ; Rod Gown, with the Wmgatui bracket, i Semhric and .'\vinkle, in most favour j uniong tho others. The Reaver was first to show out, but Jass soon headed him, and led to the straigot, with Counter Attack Horn, tin a, iBo me Kid and Red Gown following in that order. Some Kid drew out in the. straight, but Rod Gown then challenged, and, finishing on well, she beat Some Kid by a neck. Jazz was a fair third, with Horatius and The Reaver next. Red Gown won four races in quick suoce*>sion during the Christinas and New Year meetings last season, but. she had not scored since then. She 18 just coining bark to form, and can he marked off for further hon.otit v B. She runs out a mile well. Soule Kid Carried his big load in good style .and just failed to stall oil the winner's challenge. A milo is quite for enough for him. Jazz had every chance, but he faded rut at tho end in disappointing fashion. There were only six starters lor the Eiffelt-on Hack Welter Handicap. Love-sign was a good favourite, with B.uff aud Dame Straitlacc also solidly backed. Lovosign was out in front c2rly, followed by Lord Leslie. Ivilada a.nd Bluff, but at the end of two furJongt. First Aid was in second plajce. Bluff came out wide at tho turn, and, gradually wearing Lovesign down, lie went on to win comfortably. First Aid was o poor third, a long way in front of Dome Straitiace. Rluff, who is a four-year-old by Martian from Lady Disdain, is a. great track galloper, but this was the first time he had shown anything like his kest form in a race. Having made a start, however, there is nothing to prevent him from emulating the best deeds of his brother and sister, bnub and Bee. He has the quail heat ions, if he can be induced to race generously. Lovesign showed plenty of speed, but wa*> unlucky to inejit sucli a doughty rival as Bluff in a galloping mood. 'The rest of tlie field raced very badly. The concluding event- —the Farewell Handicap, drew a field of seven. Mantua wound up a little better backed than Battle Scene, while Bella Lake also had plenty of friends. Mantua and Bella Lake were first out, but Mantua soon lost Ids place, Weary Willie going on in front, followed by Battle Scene, while Mantua was fourth at the homo turn. On reaching the straight Battle Scene drew up, and she won comfortably from Mantua, who finished well and just, got second place, the others being in a bunch. The time was comparatively slow, arid the manner in which the race was run just suited Battle Scene, whose pace served her over the last two furlongs. On her day she i& smart. Mantua. was 01 trifle unlucky. But for losing his position soon otter tho start lie would have given the winner a lot more troublo. Counter Attack is racing very consistently, and lie should soon be a winner. Bella Lake hod every chance. hut she faded out in tho straight, and on this showing sli© is only a moderate. She should, however, be capable of something better, and probably she was not quite wound up.

a fi t M ° f SCve ” lined 11 P f °r the Ashburton County Handicap. Foo C how was a strong favourite, carrying more than twice as much mopey ns Almoner or Royal'Star, who were evenly barked.

Linden and Silent King showed the way to Almoner in the early staves with Koo cbow and Royal Star “bringing up the rear. Roval Mae was just behind Ihe leaders at the half-mile, post, and be .joined thorn at the home turn, where Foo Chow was also going well. Royal Mac landed in the straight first, and though Foo Chow

went- alter him. the result was never in doubt. Royal Mar winning earily b.v two length*. Almoner w r as nearly two lengths behind Foo Chow, and then came Silent King, with the others close up. Royal Mac paid a good dividend, as ho carried only a. quarter of tho money that was invested on the favourite. Many people seemed to have made up their minds that ho was only a sprinter, forgetful of the fact that last November, at the South Canterbury meeting, he dead-heated with Silent King over a mile and a quarter. Apparently he was improved on Saturday by his race the previous day, as ho was always going freely, ami he finished in fine style, suggestive of further honours over a journey later in the season. Foo Chow ran a good race, and he lost none of his New Zealand Cup admirers. Tf present intentions arc carried out he will not race again until he stops out. for the two mile race, in which he can bo relied on for a good performance. Almoner gave a creditablo showing, and ho may pick up a. race very soon. Silent King went fairly well, though 1 fancy he was expected to do better. Linden showed up in front for nearly a mile and then faded out. He will soon he \n the money. Warlike never looked like a winner, but if he remains sound he may improve shortly. Royal Star met with interference soon after the start, a* u result of ivhich H. Bn. r.s, the rider of Warlike, was er»ufirmed. It is doubtful, however, if Royal Star could have reversed positions with Foo Chow. There were sixteen starters for the Melrose Trot Handicap. Lauriston was favourite, but Vera's Doll also came in for » solid support, and seve ral others were backed prettly confidently. It w’bs one of the beat trotting events ever seen on a racing club programme in Canterbury. Eight of the competitors w’ere in close order at the home turn, and Vera’s Doll was assist ed to a two lengths win by a lucky run in the. straight, where several of* her rivals were disappointed in trying to get through. Imshi and Lucy Pointer were in the places, with five others in a bunch just behind them.

HORSE DOPING,

FRENCH TURF PROBLEM. By Telogra ph—Press Association—Conyrisht Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received September 2d, 8.<5 a.in.) PARIS, September 2d. Horse-doping* continues to be the most urgent problem of the Freueh. Turf. Meanwhile, a well-known fDt race trainer is bringing dii action against the Societo d:Encc.uragement, claiming heavy damages, cn the ground that his license as a trainer ha-s been suspended on the ground of doping. 1 ‘ Doping of racehorses in an endeavour to make them gailufj faster is extensively carried out on Melbourne ccuvses,” said a leading veterinary surgeon in Victoria recently. “It :s cruei and very dangerous to give stimulants to racehorses, as is now being done in Melbourne,’’ he continued. “ Tho trouble is that the people who do tins are inexperienced, and they have little idea of the quantity of drug to administer. The horse troatecl becomes mad, and is a great danger in races. The treatment is of no benefit to n horse, and undermines its constitution,. One only has to see tho distressed faces of soifio of the horses after st race to know that they have been doped up to the* eyebrows.” The veterinary surgeon points out that arsenic can be discovered ip tfie Saliva, of bur 9&s 36 hours after adminb'tr»-t-ion. Vera’s Doll, in spite of good fortune iu the closing stages, registered a fine performance, as she got off badly and she had to turn on a great burst of speed to get to the leaders.

Lucv Pointer ran a solid race after loeing a lot of ground at the start. Dolly Doyle, from the back mark, paced well all through and might have been even closer up if she could have found an opening in the straight. Dancing Doll led into the straighv from Arniform and Far North, but tho last-named, finishing well, won handily. It was an impressive performance on the part of the winner, who dhoti IJ win again in better company. . The hurdle race produced a field nt ten. York Abbey, Bathos an i Orofino began smartly, the last-named pair being together entering the straight. York Abbey aud Ballymena challenged in the straight, but Bathos won comfortably. It was an excellent performance on the pari, of tho winner, who ran out the distance in fine style. York Abbey aud Ballymena also impressed. but Orofino failed under pressure. order mentioned. Somo Fashion was soon in front and piloted the field for seven furlongs, attended by Khublai Khan, Royal Present, Admiral Codringfcon and Arch Salute. Rounding a herd into the top straight Royal Present ran to the front and it was apparent he would win unless he tired in the run homo. Arch Salute and Admiral Codrington hung on to tho leader entering tho straight, but Royal Present shook them off. Inside the distance Gasbag, Glen Canny and Gold Kip challenged, but they could make little impression on the leader, who stayed on well. Gasbag made a fine finishing effort, but Royal Present is all that he promised to develop into when racing last autumn. He is an Australian bred horse by Beragoom—Royal Pet. He was near to death as a yearling and w'as presented hv j Air E. W. Alison junr to \V. J. Wilson, who aavod his .life. IT© lias proved indeed a Royal Present. The favourite’s chance was soon extinguished, as he fell atithc first fence. Seville led till the last round, when Otar a took charge, followed by Starland. The latter fell at the last fence but one. when he appeared to have the leader beaten. Otar a then won bv fifteen length-?, only the three placed horses finishing. Starland gave a. good display and he* may be expected to prove useful over big country. A good field of seventeen faced tho starter for the Flying Handicap, Civilform being favourite, with Dovelet, King’s Trumpeter and Pavo also well supported. Dovelet, Royal Blood, Tama-n-roa and Pavo moved off quickly. There was practically no alteration iu the positions throughout the race. Dovelet staying on to w in well. Royal Blood made a. great effort in the straight but could not- reach the leader. The Henderson. Hack Handicap saw nineteen starters parade. The Geoffrey aud Sandaur bracket was the popular choice, Tactful. Brctlond and Euphoria being next in order. Euphoria was the- early .leader, closely attended by Tin oka ha and Geoffrey. Euphoria led throughout, getting homo easily. Geoffrey was the olilv horse to trouble the leader and lie is evidently regaining form.
