A social gathering in the form of a smoke concert was held 011 Saturday night. The presentation of prizes \vasi one ol the chief items ori the business side of the . programme and over the toast list various speakers j had something to sav on the progress of cycling and aspects of the day’.* race. The function was conducted by the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, the president, Air W. J. Walter. occupying the chair. In welcoming the large crowd, which assembled the chairman mentioned that the concert was the second held in connection with the big race, ami the centre hoped to make it an annual affair. The day’s race, 110 thought, was a record one. The toast of “ Our Parliament and Civic Government ” Was proposed b> Mr T. I’. O’Rourke. In responding Dr H. T. J. Thackei congratulated the centre on the tri umph of the day. He said New Zealand had as their Governor-General one of the greatest sailors the world had seen, and he was also a sport l.ord JelJicoe had expressed himself as delighted to he associated with a country which had responded so readily 'n the present crisis. “ The New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union ” was proposed by Mr J. Hamlet, who congratulated this body on having introduced professional cycling into the country and brought) it to a. successful issue. He saw no reason why the professional element should not be • successful as long as ivas kept on as clean a level as wot evident in New Zealand. The response was madje by Mr Mo?, ter. who reviewed the progress iuad r | by the centre since its revival about I three years ago. From the great sup port accorded tho day’s race he was sure that cycling was going to boom | again. In referring to the work of i officials, he made special mention of j the splendid help' given by the Timaru j Borough Council who had closed the road at the starting point. The Ashburton Borough Council the Canterbury Park Trotting Club and the police had rendered good assistance. Mr J. Mealings, who acted as hail dienppet in conjunction with A 1 r Walter, also responded. He remark ed that the two first riders had put up a great performance. When Mackie was put on the 40-minute mark it was the speaker’s belief that he would never see the race out. It must have been the first time in the historv of racing that a boy of sixteen had completed a 312-mile road event in that time. Mr Mealing;- bespoke sup port for the Egmont road race, to be hold in Taranaki next month. Prizes were presented by the Mayor, and in congratulating the winner .ho said Mackie was fortunate in having ftucli two a-ood sports as his father and mother. A call for cheers for Mr and Mrs Mackie received a hearty response. After the recipient had received his cheque more cheers were forthcoming. Continued enthusiasm marked the cere-
monv. A matter for comment was the youth of the first five men, none being beyond their twenty-second year. The champion, Phil O’Shea, came in for a groat oration An announcement was made that tho Boomerang Cup. presented b.v Mr A. Goodhart. of the Barnet Glass Co., for the rider fcoring most points in track events, had been won by T. Greig. of Greendale. The cup presented b.v the same donor for winner of most points
