MORNING TON V. RANGERS, SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. There was a bis crowd at English Park to-day. when Mornington (Dunedin) played Bangers (Canterbury) for the South island championship. There was practically no wind, and the ground was dry and fast. The teams lined out as follow’s:— Mornington.—Goal. Brady; hacks. Hall and Dickie; halves, McFarlane, L. Johnson. A. Johnson; forwards, Catto, McGregor. Newman, Loitcli and Stevens. Rangers.— Goal. Tupe ; backs. Lindley and Lusk; halves, Liiburns. Aspinall, aud Shaw; forwards: Barwell. Bissett, Dowker. Korner, Liddon. Mornington kicked off and set up an attack which put Stevens in possession. The winger put to goal, and Newman .mst missed with a dangerous cross shot. From a line combined movement the visitors again attacked, and only good defensive work by Lindley and Lusk averted a score. A pretty movement by Dowker. Bissett and Barwell made ground for Rangers, and Dowker went down the centre. Dickie relieved. but Barwell gathered and put to goal, where Dowker headed through. Rangers. 1: Mornington. 0. From the kick Mornington broke away and McGregor brought Tupe into action. Leitch was handy, and he drove for goal, but the shot went wide. Aspinall sent Rangers away in attack, and Barwell. going down the wing, sent in a square shot, which Brady gathered. Aspinall and Dowker sent in shots, lout the Mornington keeper was safe. Play strung to the other end. and Newman tested Tupe with a lobbing shot. Fast give-and-take play 'followed, both sides showing flue eombinaation. Lilbnrne received from Leich and put to Dowker. who sent on to Barwell, but the winger was ruled off-side. Mornington retaliated through Stevens, and Tupe punched out from Newman. From a Rangers attack Catto broke away for the visitors, and he finished with a perfect centre. Newman gathered aud netted, hut. was ruled off-side, and from the free kick Liddon broke away for Rangers, but Dickie relieved from the centre. ominetnn became aggressive and Tupe conceded a corner from Newman, which was cleared. Fast exchanges opened the second half and Mornington almost immediately pressed. Tupe gathered a shot,, but was penalised for carrying, and from the free kick Dickie scored. Mornington 2. Rangers j. Rangers attacked from rbe kick. but. Hall relieved, and sent Catto away. The winger beat the defence and centred for M’Gregor to score with a shot which gave Tupe no chance. Mornington 3. Rangers l. Catto was very prominent for the visitors in ensuing play and was nearly through twice. Rangers swung play dovrn the right, but Dickie relieved from Harwell and Catto again broke away and shot, but Tupe gathered. Mornington were confining play to the left wing, and the play of Catto and M'Gregor kept Rangers defending. A brief attack by Rangers and then Morningt<*u were back again, but Lilburno relieved from a dangerous position. Dowker made a break for Rangers and sent on to Liddon. who was unmarked, but the winger finished with a weak shot. Ranerers forced two corners in quick succession. which Mornington cleared, and the visitors rushed play to the other end, where Lindley relieved in the nick of time. ‘ At the other end Brady was safe with shot*-* from Barwell and Bissett, and play came back for Mornington to force a corner which was cleared. A period of defending followed for Rangers until a combined attack by Bissett and Harwell brought relief. Mornington attacked with nice combination, hut M'Gregor shot wide when well placed. A smart attack on the Rangers’ right looked promising, but Dickie relieved, and at the* other end Catto was nearly through. Rangers were not showing their earlier combination, and from a Mornington attack Lilburne relieved. M’Gregor gathered but shot over the bar from close in.
