A report received from tho residents at Grab's Corner stated that there were now twelve children who would attend if the school was reopened. It was agreed to reopen the school if the residents would guarantee a salary of £IOO and provide free lodgings. It was agreed that tho hoard could not, see its wav to reopen the school at French Farm. In response to a letter from the Department. reporting that an application had been made for tho establishment of a Native school at Port Levy, it. was decided io si ate that, the matter had been referred to the senior inspector.. A letter was received from the Ashburton committee protesting against the proposed alteration in the boundary between their district and that of Hampsend. It was agreed to suggest to the Hampstead committee a a an alternative that they should endeavour to obtain the Ashburton committee’s consent, to William Street being the boundary. It- was .agreed to re-advertise several positions in order that permanent teachers might be appointed to the East Christ--1 church School. A letter was received from the Department reporting that it had been decided *o set apart twenty-five scholarships for pupils attending schools not higher than Grade ITT.A. An application from the head master* at Somortield for an additional assistant ferred by the committee to the Department. with favourable recommendation. A letter was received from the Sydenham committee disagreeing with the proposed alteration in the boundary between Sydenham and Beckenham School districts. D was agreed to inform the Beckenham committee of tho objections. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The committee reported that it was resolved to submit a. proposal for the rebuilding of the Kumara School and to find half the cost. The Department had granted £415 for material for a new school building .it Mangamauuu. It was suggested that the old residence he disposed of and t.ho proceeds devoted to the erection of a portablecottage. The Department had authorised additions at Irwell for which the- local residents had contributed £IBO. As the result of a- report from members i who had visited the district, it was decided to apply to the Department for authority to purchase a new site at Kaia poi. for which the committee had agreed to contribute £2OO. In response to an application from the committee, the Little Akaloa School was 1-la.ced on tho next list for rebuilding. J A deputation from Papanui bad waited i on the committee with several requests, i and it, was resolved that the. committee i visit the district on Tuesday, October 17. The Department had authorised t.ho remodelling of the old school at Phillipstown, on condition that the South Belt school was closed, the cost to bo met equally by the board and the Department. This matter was referred to a subcommittee. of town members to invest i gate and report, to next meeting. The Department had asked that, an estimate be. submitted for two rooms in brick at New Brighton, and also an estimate for two rooms in wood at North Brighton. For South Brighton the Department suggested that a. small section might bo rented on whi ?h a temporary building could be erected. The committee had authorised the ex penditure of £G9 for renovations at Sprejdon. Correspondence was received from tho Department and the Takamat.ua Commit- 1 tee regarding the rebuilding of the school. It was resolved to reply to the commit- 1 fee that it was too late to alter the plqu. and that in any case sufficient floor space was being provided for the requirementi of the district. A letter received from the Department regarding the adjustment of accounts for , the* years 1920-21 showed that the amount i due to the board was £1473 19s 3d. The architect's report stated that applifor a portable school for Okute Valley. A grant of £250 for improved lighting and other alterations at Riccarton was also to bo asked for.
