PAYING THE PENALTY.
THREE PRISONERS SENTENCED. Three prisoners were brought- up for sentence before hie Honour Mr Justice Adams to-day. Douglas James Simpson. .seventeen rears of age, was brought up for sentence for theft of moneys from liis’emAlr R. Twyneham. for the prisoner, said that the crime was unpremeditated. I’ll© prisoner’s parents had exercised strong control over him. All the money he had stolen was recovered except 15sATr A. T. Donnelly. Crown Prosecutor. said that lie had received a letter from a school inspector in Christchurch formerly headmaster of a school attended by the prisoner, who said that the prisoner had had a good record for conduct at school. The probation officer reported favourably. Mr Twyneham said that if the prisoner was admitted to probation his father would send him into the* court-, try. The prisoner was admitted to probation for t-liree years, on condition' that he made complete restitution to his employer and paid, the costs of the prosecution. £2 11 s. / Thomas Leonard Aloir and AlaJoomc* Smith wer© placed in the dock together to l>e sentenced for breaking and entering a e-hop at Alethven and stealing goods from it. Both are young men. They had nothing to say why sentence should not be passed on them. Smith was convicted of false pretences at Tint nn 1 this year, and was admitted to probation. Aloir was convicted of minor offences early this year. Hi= Honor ordered each prisoner to be detained for reformative treatment for not more than three years.
