THE MEMORIAL BRIDGE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As a returned soldier I wish to protest against the fuss that is being made over the proposed use of Tasmanian stone for the Bridge of Remembrance. There is far too much parochialism these days, and it would be utterly ridiculous to sacrifice the appearance of the bridge by using local stone which is entirely unsuitable for such a purpose. The architect surety knows his business best, and the assurance of the chairman of the Memorial Committee that efforts to find a New Zealand stone that would serve the purpose were unsuccessful, should be sufficient to satisfy all reasonable people. Now that the committee is endeavouring to raise additional funds for completing the bridge, it seems somewhat bad taste for our local industrialists to put a spoke in the wheel. In any qase the loss to New Zealand in consequence of the importation of this Tasmanian stone will be practically infinitesimal. The stone will arrive in Christchurch in its rough state and plenty of work will be provided in preparing it for use.—l am, etc., SUBSCRIBER.
