St Louis has been, scratched for the St Leger. From present appearances the field for the St Leger. the last of tho English elae.J si*' races, will be robbed of much of its interest, owing to several of the best threeI year-olds of the year being amiss. The scratching of Captain Guttle was followed by the withdrawal of Tamar, the winner and runner-up for the Derby failing to survive the preparation for the Doncaster ract next week. St Louis, whose scratching is now announced, won the Two Thousand Guineas, and he has been one of the favourites for the St Leger since Captain Cuttle went out. THE CODING BATTLE. The keen interest taken in the battle on Saturday next in the Chelmsford Stakes between Beau ford and Gloaming. has been enhanced by the Now Zealander's latest track performance. From a moving: staid; Gloaming gave Otipidon three lengths. The latter showed the wav for half a mile in 48|sec. but with a furlong to go. and the watch showing 1 min 15 sec. Gloaming was clear, and going on finished the seven furlongs in Imin 29 sec. well within himself.' Ileauford. at Newcastle, with a heavy weight up. galloped a mile in Imin 45Asoc\ the last seven furlongs in Imin 32sec.
