Sam Richards and Charles Toth, Americans, started from Dover to swim the Channel on Saturday night Richards abandoned his attempt after five miles, and Toth, after eleven hours in the water, gave up the task when five miles from Gris'nez, owing to the strong wind and heavy sea. Tom Morris, an Australian, did not start, and Henry Sullivan (an American) postponed hia attempt.
