THE TASMAN TEA.

DIFFICULTY OF RENAMING. ONE WAY OUT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright “ The Timeß " Service. (Received August 24, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 23. Apropos of the difficulty in connection with the renaming of the Tasman “ Anzac Sea,” shipping experts suggest that the only procedure seems to be. to send a letter to all nations asking them to observe the altered name after a certain date. HISTORICAL NAME SHOULD BE RETAINER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received August 24, 11.35 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 24. Mr K. IT. Cramp, honorary secretary of the Royal Australian Historical Society. states that his council recently declined a request to support the proliosal to change the name “Tasman” Sea to “ Anzac,” as it considered that whilst all honour should be given to the Anzacs, it should not be given by dishonouring’ the memory of one of Australia’s greatest discoverers. In any case, it would be a. bad precedent, as a future generation might substitute a new name or yet another. Furthermore, the change,.would constitute an ungracious breach of international etiquette. Britain previously has resented attempts by French and German cartographers to substitute new names for New Britain, New Ireland, and other places.: Now the request is made to wipe out the name of the Dutch navigator, Tasman, whose name like that of Anzac. is also full of significance to both countries. inasmuch as he discovered the tries .inasmuch as he discovered the waterway between them.
