ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.

INQUEST AT ASHBURTON. An inquest touching the sudden death of Mr Charles Joseph Cowan was oonduefied on Sundav by the District C oroner (Mr J. Cow*). Evidence wag given by Mrs Marion Campbell Cowan, who said that her huaband had never complained of illness, but had sometimes complained of what he thought was indigestion. He went for his usual walk after tea. and returned at nine o'clock, and went to bed at about ten o'clock. He complained of sickness shortly after going to bed. He was frequently sick from 10.30 to 12.30. At the latter hour h< that he felt better, but collapsed at one o’clock. Witness sent lor Or W. J. Mullin. Her husband had done an unusually heavy day’s gardening that day. Dr Mullin said that when he arrived deceased was lying on a couch. Life was extinct. Witness performed a post mortem. The body was well nourished, and presented no external appearances to indicate the probable cause of death. The coronary arteries o v the heart- were atheromatous, this being the thickening of the walls. Witness considered that the sudden end was due to the degenerated coronary arteries being blocked by a small embolus, and probably the pain which deceased ascribed to indigestion was in reality due to the condition of his heart. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evideifce.
