LAWN TENNIS.
CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION, Delegates to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association met last night, Mr W. N. Seay presiding. A letter was received from the New Zealand Association stating that it had not received further information regarding the Anthony Wilding Cup competition for the Australasian States. The quarterly report of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Association, to be submitted to the meeting of the council on August 31, mentioned that tho New South Wales Association harl decided to send a team of ladies to New Zealand at the end of the year. The committee was considering details of a suitable itinerary. Concerning the 1922 New Zealand championships. arrangements were well in hand for the meeting to be held at Hastings. The committee’s representatives had inspected the Hastings Club's grounds, and an active committed was making the preliminary arrangements. The financial statement showed that an amount of .£717 19s Id was received from the Lawn Tennis Association of Australasia as share of the Davis Cup funds. Mr A. E. Steere asked whether the ladies’ matches in the annual competitions could not be held earlier. He instanced last season, when he said that after Christmas interest slackened off. The opinion of the meeting seemed to be that this could be arranged satisfactorily. Another delegate considered that entries for the Junior A Grade competition be called a-s early z. s possible. Delegates adopted a motion recommending the Match Committee to open the competitions earlier. In reply to a question, the. chairman said that so far nothing had been done logarding the establishment of Association courts. However, he thought that an effort to obtain them should bo made in the coming year and taken up seriously It would take some time before they could get. ways and means. He stressed the disabilities that the association had been under last year in obtaining grounds and making gate charges. He said that it was only very hard work on the part of the committee that the New Zealan 1 championships and Wilding Shield matches were such a success. It was resolved that the matter be put. on the order paper for discussion at the annual association meeting. Tine running of a suburban B competition was suggested by Mr A. Spicer. Tf a trophy was offered, he said that the com petition would undoubtedly be- successful. The proposal was recommended to the. favourable consideration of the Match Committee. Tho date of flip annual meeting of the association was fixed for September 27.
