NEW ZEALANDER'S DEATH. COLLAPSES AFTER SUCCESSFUL FIGHT. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. SYDNEY, August 21. Frank Griffen, a welter-weight from New Zealand, after knocking out Curly Parka, at Wollongong oji Saturday, collapsed and died the following day. The late Frank Griffen who was born in Greymouth. was well known in New Zealand as a welter-weight of considerable merit, his bouts with Denny Murphy in 1917 being memorable ones*. He incurred disqualification and went to Australia, where ho gradually worked his way up tho ladder of fistic fame. He won a succession of bouts by the knock-out route. Recently he sustained defeat at the hands of Ring, the middleweight, who at Melbourne on Saturday night, defeated Tommy Urea for the middleweight championships of Australia. Griffen, whose disqualification in New Zealand had recently been lifted, had announced his intention of returning to New Zealand, but he stayed in Australia when promised another match with Ring, and later, with Ureu. The deceased boxer comes of a family several members of which achieved considerable success iu the roped arena in New Zealand. A brother, Mr John Griffen, resides in Christchurch and the sympathy of followers of boxing will go out to him and other members of the family in their bereavement. TIMARU ASSOCIATION. Tho Timaru Boxing Association strongly protests against the proposal to change the system of control of boxing, as suggested at tho Auckland conference, b.v which there will be three centres in the South Island—Canterbury, Otago and Westland—the Timaru body losing its identity. It was decided strenuously to fight the adoption of tho proposal, it being pointed out, that Timaru wasV a growing ' centre in the sport, and for the New Zea- t land championships holds the second highest financial returns on record, while for the recent island championships held for the first time here Timaru had a higher return than the North Island.
