At the conclusion of the business the Assistant Commissioner gave an interesting and lucid lecture on The Eye,” illustrating his remarks by frequent diagrams, so that the structure and working of the eye were readily followed. An anomaly which was pointed out was that though the eyes are more useful than the teeth and cannot be replaced, many mothers send their children regularly to the dentist, hut practically never to the oculist. Members present were warned against allowing children to read for hours at a time. No doubt on a wet day a mother was thankful if a child became absorbed in a book, but the lecturer pointed out that with children the walls of the eye had not yet hardened and the constant use of certain muscles in reading led to congestion and inflammation, and then to the lengthening of the shape of the eye, so that vision lwscara© interfered with. Lying in front of the fire reading tended to the same result in children, as the heat brought too much blood to the eyes, and congestion and the pushing backwards of the back of the eye followed, with the consequent upset of focus.
