Recent nrrivals at the Clarendon include Mr and Mrs G. Dickie, of Dunedin. Departures from Warner’s include Mr and Mrs Geoffrey Dr age, who hare gone on to Timaru. Overseas visitors to Christchurch include Mr and Mrs O. J. Ohrenstein, of ►Syracuse, N.Y., U.S.A., who are staying at Warner’s. Mr and Mrs James Roberts, of Dunedin, who came down from Wellington Inst night are amongst the guests at Warner’s. Mr and Mrs G. B. Banks, of Wellington, who have been staving at the United Service, went on to Dunedin today. Mr and Mrs J. Robertson, of Sawyers Bay, Dunedin, arrived in Christchurch yesterday and arc staying at the Clarendon. Mrs S. Brice, of Wellington. who has been at the Clarendon for a few days, has gone to stay with her sister, Mrs R. Walker, Sumner. Mrs D. Rattray, of Woolston, accom*panied by her daughters. Misses Jessie and Flossie Rattray are. leaving by the s.s. Pnloona for Melbourne for an extended holiday. Miss Davies, of “ Ridgeway Farm,” Irwell, is in town for a, few days, and is the guest of her cousins, Mr and Mrs J. Marshall, 51, Edinburgh Street, Spreydon. Mr and Mrs Alfred J. Bunz have issued invitations for a reception to be held in Balia ntyne’s Tea Rooms on Wednesday afternoon in honour of Mr Toscha Seidel, the celebrated violinist, who is visiting Christchurch next week. A very enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mrs Mitchell, St Albans, on Thursday evening, when dancing, songs and games were indulged in until an earlv hour. Among those present were Misses G. and W. White, N. Rolleston. M. Pearce, K. Milne, N. Spence, R. Hanna, 15.l 5 . and AT. Read, Messrs H. Anderson, W. McMahon, P. Sinclair, W. Mullins, J. Vaughan, R. Hart, J. Collins, T. Mitchell, W. Tucker, and F. Jones. The young ladies of the Opava Ale thodist Bible Class held a very successful and enjoyable social on Wednesday. The evening was devoted to competitions, games, items and a community ting led by Air T W. West. A delicious supper Was served by the your.g ladies. Those rendering items were Alis.> Edna Wallis and Aliss Alice Py crcft. A playette was greatly enjoyed by the audience, the girls taking part being Alisses R. Dick, A. Py croft, T. Laskey and B. Hillary. The success of the evening was due to Airs H. Cook, to whom a hearty vote of thanks was passed by all present. Invitations have been issued for the West Christchurch Past Students’ Association annual ball to be held in the Winter Garden on September 13. Music will eb provided by Aliss MacDonald’s orchestra, while a second orchestra wiU be in attendance to provide the extras. The committee, comprising the Misses L. Sanderson, M. Freeman. O. Poulton, T Tret he way and Alessrs T. H. Dolan, N. Perry. G. White; H. A. Barrett and A. L. Nicholson, with Aliss E. Byers and Air K. The Ohristchurc’n Plain Dance Assembly held a special waltzing competition at the St Asaph Street Hall on "Wednesday, which resulted as follows: —Air Andrews and Aliss Bate? 1 ; Air Beaumont and Miss Beaumont 2. The Assembly will hold another waltzing competition at the Beckenham Hall on Alonday next.

Seldom has St wSaviour’s Hall presented so festive an appearance as on Saturday lart on the occasion of an evening in aid of the sweet stall. The prizes were presented by the Rev W - F. Hughes vicar. Aliss Pruden and Mr W. H. Beale won the waltzing competition, which was judged by Aliss Dorothy Wicks, while Aliss Alvers and Air Potter won the euchre. In order to allow all members of the association to see a demonstration, seats will be reserved for them on the night they are able to attend, if they present their member’s ticket at Turnbull and Jones’ any day during the week. On Wednesday evening the members of the St John’s (Woolston) branch of the G.F.S. entertained the members of the Holy Trinity (Lyttelton) branch at a social and dance in the St John’s schoolroom. Music for dancing was supplied by Aliss V. Goupland, and extras Mere played by Alisses Martin and Champ. A song by Aliss E. Round and a play acted by five members of the local branch were received with much applause. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr G. Chattaway.
