A libel action brought by prominent citizens, Mr H. M. Scott, K.CJ., and Sir Maynard Hedstrom, against the Council of Planters, has occupied the Court for the past four days, and resulted in the jury returning an unanimous verdict for £2Q:O and co^-ts. The jury added as a rider, that they would, not give heavier damages because the plaintiffs did not press, and also because the time was inopportune. The libel was contained in an article written by the Secretary qI the Council of Planters in May last, statiug that the plaintiffs forced the discontinuance of a local steamer service, to serve their own ends. Plaintiffs are members of the Executive and Legislative Councils of the Colony and the case caused tremendous interest locally. The damages awarded are being given to charity.
