Air W. M. Bain, the Otago Rugby representative, is returning home to Dunedin after a short stay in Christchurch. Air H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., han been appointed a member of the Visiting and Institutions Committee of the M’Lean Institute. Messrs .T. S. Hawkes. president, and P. R. Harman, secretary, of the South Island M.otor Union are expected to return to Christchurch from Blenheim to-morrow. Air P. E. Teppemaj Consul-General Australia and New Zealand for the Netherlands, arrived in Christchurch from the West Coast last evening. After spending ten days in Canterbury, Mr Teppema will go to Dunedin, Air G. AV. Armitage, chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, and Air E. H. Andrews, a former chairman, will represent the Board at a Conference of Education Board* in Wei lingtop on September 27. Pastor W. I>. Alore. of the Church, of Christ, Dominion Road, Auckland, has accepted an invitation to labour with the Church of Christ, Mobrhous© Avenue. His ministry commences early in September. The Rev A. T. Thompson, New Zealand agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society, is in Christchurch at present, in connection with the annual appeal on behalf of the society. He will preach at the Anglican Cathedral on Sunday night. Mr Thompson, who is accompanied by Airs Thompson, will remain in Canterbury for a week or two.

The Canterbury Education Board has appointed Air C. H. Opje its representative on the Board of Governors of the Christchurch Technical College, Air J. R. Lack jffcis representative on the Board of Governors of the Fairlie Technical School, and Air G. W. Armitage its representative on the Board of Governors of the Temuka Technical School, f The Public Service Commissioner has announced the following promotions in the Customs Department >—Air B. Anderson, inspector at Christchurch, to be inspector at Dunedin ; Air F. C. J. Fantham, examining officer qt Christchurch, to be inspector at Christchurch : Mr 11. A. Wild, examining officer at Christchurch, to he collector at Grey mouth.

Air S. J. Collett. Government Tourist agent in Christohurch, will leave next week on an extensive visit to the North Island, taking in the Tongariro National Park, Taupo and Wairakei, Lake Waikaremoana and a trip which i.s practically unknown to the general public, although it embraces some of the finest scenery in New Zealand, namely from Gisborne to Rotorua via Opotiki, and then to Whakatane and via five lakes to Rjatorua. Air ’Collett, wijjj return to Christchurch about September 18.

Lieut. W. G- Berryman, son of Air and Airs H. G. Berryman, of Stanley Down*. Hqkatu. Nelson, who obtained decorations for hi 6 service with the New Zealand forces, is en route to New Zealand. During his stsy in England he sought Parliamentary honours. but was not successful i n winning a seat. For a while he was in Ireland, and has since vinited Bermuda. Cuba. New Orleans and other parts of America and Canada, where hv has been touring for th© past two years. He will probably deliver a few lectures during his visit to New Zea land.

Wellington is experiencing a mild epidemic of throatal influenza, states the “ Dominion.’’ Ac long as two months ago Dr Herbert diagnosed Miss Rosinn Buckman’s complaint as throatal influenza. Since then this trouble seems to have spread all over Wellington. and several Government officials have had to knock under to the unpleasant visitor within the last week. One of the latest sufferers is the Official Assignee (Air S. S. Taneley), who i« iv present confined to his bed. The newest form of influenza is prefaced by headaches and general lassitude. Neglect of the trouble is apt to bring on a form of bronchitis. Mr Walter F. Herrick, who. after several years 7 servioe cm the selling staff of the Vacuum Oil Company Proprietary, Ltd., resigned at the end of last month in order to take over the general secretaryship of the United Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen.’s Association of Now Zealand, was recently farewellod by the Oil Company’* staff.
