RIOTS IN NOVA SCOTIA.

CLASH BETWEEN PICKETS AND VOLUNTEERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. OTTAWA, April 17. As the result of a clash between pickets of the striking coal miners at Glace Bay (Nova Scotia) and volunteers to man the pumps, several persons were injured. The strikers were victorious and the mine officials were compelled to work pumps themselves. The Minister of Defence. Mr G. Graham, sent a detachment of several hundred troops to the scene of the disturbance upon the request from the mine officials. The Minister of Labour, Mr J. Murdoch, telegraphed to Mr W. Lewis, president of United Mine workers of America, asking him to appeal to the Nova Scotia miners to return to the pumps and continue negotiations with the Empire Steel Corpora tion which owns the mines. The strike which occurred on Monday over a reduction of wages, appeared to be of insignificant proportions until the miners deserted the pumps.
