THE TASMAN SEA.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —After reading your leader in Saturday’s “Star” on the above subject I said “ them’s my sentiments.” As you point out, there are historical and sentimental grounds why the name of the sea should not he changed from Tasman to Anzac, and these T think will be sufficient to squash the proposal. T am sure returned soldiers do not want their deeds commemorated by wiping out the present name of the sea which was given a® a tribute to the memory of the great Dutch sailor who discovered this country. It is just like proposing to rename Cook Strait Somme Strait to commemorate one of the fiercest fights the New Zealanders were ever engaged in. 1 wonder how such a proposal as this would be received in the Dominion ? The imamiriious cry should be “ Hands off ” when any attempt is made to meddle with historical place names.- T am, etc.. RETURNED SOLDIER.
