The Superintendent of Mercantile Marine reports that the master of the liner Opawa passed a conical buoy at 11.35 a.m. on July 26 in lat. 26deg. S.. long. 135 deg. W. The buoy was covered with rust and barnacles, and -was in the direct track of shipping bound from Panama to Auckland. The Storm leaves Lyttelton this evening for Picton and Wanganui. The Calm was dispatched at noon on Saturday for Bluff, Dunedin, Oamaru and Timaru. The vessel is due back on Saturday next. The Kahika arrived yesterday morning from Timaru. The vessel loads here to-day for Nelson and New Plymouth, and sails this evening via New Plymouth. The Wakatu, on arrival at Kaikoura on Saturday morning from Lyttelton, found that she could not work the port and returned to Lyttelton on Saturday night. The vessel sails this evening for Kaikoura. The Cygnet sailed on Saturday night for Kaikoura, Nelson and Motueka. She will return to Lyttelton on Wednesday, via KaiMany seamen in Wellington are in distress owing to inability to secure work, either , ashore or afloat, (says Saturday’s Post”). Not, all of the sailors out of employment are eligible to be taken on at the relief work for seafarers in progress at Anderson Park, consequently there are many men who stand in urgent need of help. Forty men are being fed daily in the shed kindly provided by the Harbour Board, and thirty-six men are sleeping there. The arrangements for assisting these unfortunate men are being supervised by Miss M. Weymouth, London representative and New Zealand organising secretary of the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society. Money, food, and clothing £,?e what are urtr-sntly required carry on the work, and foodstuffs wbioh are immediateh wanted are tea, coffee, cocoa sugar, and vegetables. Captain C. H. Kempson. White Star Marine Superintendent at Plymouth, ; one of the best known and most popular captains in the Shaw. Sa.vill’fl New Zealand service, has retired, after many years of service afloat and ashore. His seafaring career came to an end after he had made seventy-one trips round the world by sail and steam, and because ho had arrived at the age of retirement. THE PORT OF NELSON.
