WAGES OF SHIPS’ BOOKS.
(Pkr Prksr Association.) WELLINGTON, August 11. j The Arbitration Court is hearing an 1 application for a new award covering ships’ galley staffs. The wages sought range from £ls a month for assistant ] ships' cooks to £26 for the chief cook on intercolonial and foreign services, the same rates a* asked when the Union was previously before the Court. The old award fixed wages on the Australian scales, since when they have been reduced. The present rates, a Union representative stated, were £l3 for a 390 hour month, less than 1.01 d per hour, against Is lOd for unskilled labour. The demand is for an 8 hour day, making, with £4 allowed l‘or keep, tbe equivalent of Is 8d per hour. The j present day is. 10 hours. The Australian award has a nine hour day. The Union asks 3s per hour for overtime pay.
