A SECRET CIRCULAR.
ECHO OF 1914. SOUTH AFRICA AND THE REBELLION. By Telegraph—Pres* Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received August 3. 12.45 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, August 2. The Nationalist paper il Vaderland ” publishes a secret circular which, it is stated, was issued from the Premier’s office* to the Police and the Defence Departments. covering the declaration, made by a German before the British Ambasador at Berlin, that one of the leaders of the 1914 rebellion, who escaped to Germany, intends shortly returning to South Africa and'making another attempt. The circular alleges that two of his emissaries have already left Germany to open negotiations with his friends and that he himself will follow in a few months. The (party is said to have plenty of arms and ammunition, and as soon as the leader arrives a big expedition will be undertaken. It is further stated that the immigration authorities report that one of the persons mentioned has already arrived and another has applied for permission to return to South Africa. The Nationalist press ridicules the idea of any rising. The “ Vaderland ” states that the leader mentioned intends returning to South Africa and surrendering himself to stand trial for the part he took in the 1914 rebellion.
