ft E-DISTRI BUTION OF SEATS COUNTRY PARTY’S SCHEME. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received MELBOURNE. July 28. In the House of Representatives Dr Earl Page, leader of the Country Party, advocated a different scheme for ascertaining the number of seats to which each State was entitled. He suggested, instead of the quota scheme, a plan to divide the total number of electors by twice the number of senators plus one. The Attorney-General (Mr L. Groom) replied that the suggested substitute v.as unconstitutional. In any case. PiPage gave no good reason why n, should be adopted. Conflicting opinions were expressed by both sides of the House, a division revealing that twenty-four member? were in favour of Dr Page's scheme and twenty-five against it. the Country Party voting with Labour against the Government.
LABOUR CENSURE MOTION. MELBOURNE. July 28. In the Assembly, a Labour member moved a censure motion on the ground that the Government had accepted a private tender for the supply of hospital uniforms against a cheaper tender by the Commonwealth's clothing factory. In the House of Representatives the Minister for Home and Territories (Senator Pearce) announced that the downward trend in production bad been arrested. July 28The Government meteorologist has authorised the restoration of the whole telegraphic weather service, the recent cyclone, it is stated, being a big factor in emphasising the necessity for State wide information.
