Racing and Trotting

Notes and Comments by

“Argus"

Tlie owner of Kauwhero was fined £:2 by the Waimate stewards yesterday for failing to scratch his horse for the Hurdle Race.

Tlie silver cup which accompanied the >tako of the Hunt Club Steejilecha&e at Waimate was presented by the president. -Mr E. C. Studholme. who made a happy speech in handing it over. Ho congratulated Mr G. A. Dnnfan. the owner of Malincourt, and expressed the hope that he would return. to Waimate and have further successes there. Mr Duncan responded briefly. Master Peter, who won the Hunters’ Flat Race at the South Canterbury meeting, gave a first-ciass exhibition of jumping in the hurdle race, and won very easily from Ready, who blundered badly at aeveral of the hurdles. Master Peter is only a six-year-old and he looks like winning plenty of hunters' races yet. Malincourt stood out among the hunts s at Waimate. where he won both steeplechases confined to this class. In the Blueclilfs Steeplechase he looked like running off at the stand double the first time round, but he was kept on and during the remainder of the race fenced very safely, while in the Hunt Club Steeplechase he gave a perfect exhibition of jumping. Tn the Waimate Steeplechase yesterday Whipcord repeated his performance of the previous week at the South Canterbury meeting, and he Avon very easily. He is a very promising cross-coun-ty* horse as ht ts k good jumper and a stayer. Strathglass was pulling very hard in the early stages of the Waimate Steeplechase, but ho lost a lot of ground soon after starting on the last round, and though he made a forward more at the home turn he never looked like winning. There was an inquiry into his running, but the explanation of the rider was accepted. Faddy’s Hope got a bit the hest of the start in the Waihao Hack Handicap. and this assisted him to a comfortable win. %* Xuuerrant Tan second in two races at Waimate. His form was a great improvement on what he showed at the Son th Canterbury meeting, where he was reported to have met- with interference. Biases ran twice at Waimate but failed to repeat the form which made him a 1 nnor at the Sonth Canterbury meeting. He appears to he a horse of moods. Gripl Joke scored a very easy win in the Morven Welter Handicap. He was always well placed and he finished his task very strongly. I.ittle Willie scored a ridiculously easy 'Tin in the Hunters’ Flat Handicap at Waimate. He got off badly and was a long wav behind the leading lot at the end of lialf a mile, then he commenced to make up ground and he had bis ooponents in hopeless trouble at the entrance to the straight. Earlier in ;ke day he had finished third in tine Waihao Hack Handicap. He is half, brother by Penates to Mtchaela, bfft his racing form is very moderate. The well known hunter The Brewer, swned bv Mrs M Bethel], fell and broke his neck Whilst bunting recently with the Brnckenfield Hounds around Aniberley. The Brewer some years ago finished in second place in the Grand National Steeplechase. WAIMATE HUNT CLUB. SUCCESSFUL MEETINC, (Special to the ■' Star. 1 TIMARU. July 2.. The Waimate District Hunt. Club held its annual race nieeting yesterday. The weather was dull and threatening in th:e morning- tlio southerly wind being bitterly cold, hut the clouds gradually dispersed, and the day’s .iwrt was got off in bright sunshine. There was a good attendance, including a number of visitors from the north and south. Fair sized fields conte-sted most of the events, and the sport was interesting. Though there were no exciting finishes it was a very pleasant sporting fixture, which will probably result in a small profit, there being the unusual experience of an increase in the cotalisator figures. Racing opened with the Studholme Hunters' Hurdle Handicap. Scratchings reduced the starters to three, Master Peter carrying a few pounds more money than Ready, who had won a similar event at the South Canterbury meeting, at which Master Pete.r was successful on the flat. Thruster, the third competitor, fell early in the ■ontest. - Master Peter led practically nil the way, and heat Ready very easily. Tile winner gave a good exhibition of jumping, and he is above the average hunter’s class. Ready, on the other band, performed below expectations, blundering at several of the obstacles. There wpre nine starters for the Bluecliffs Hunters’ .Steeplechase. Malincourt being a strong favourite. The race provided a chapter of accidents. Sherlock and Prudent Boy ran off at the first fence, where Sextette fell, while Ruddy Glow and Bun well ran off at the stand double. Malincourt then went on from Dardanelles and Golden (Jr ape, I ? ut 7* furlongs further on Buddy Gold joined them, having been taken back to the fence he shirked. He was in front six furlongs from home when ho made a faulty jump, leaving Malincourt in charge again. Golden Grape challenged the leader a little further on. but fell at the last fence, and Malincourt won easily from Dardanelles. who just beat Ruddy Gold for second place. Prize was a long way lack, the only other to finish. Ma-lin-court was always going well, and he gave a, fine exhibition of jumping, though it looked as if he was going to ran off at one of the early fences Ruddy Gold ran a good '<raoe, and might have troubled the leader but for losing so much ground when he ran off. The M'aimate Steeplechase attracted t field of five. Strathglass being a flittle letter backed than Whipcord. This was 1 very interesting contest, all- the competitors completing the course without a mistake. The two favourites were always well placed, but the previous week’s form at the South Canterburv meeting was repeated, as Whipcord drew away over the last part of the

journey and beat Strathglaas comfortably. It was a smart performance on the part of WLiipcord. who is a very promising steeplechaser. He is only a novice, but next winter lie should be racing well in the best- cross country company. Strathglass ran a peculiar race. He was pulling hard in the early part, but a mile from home lie commenced to lose ground, though he moved up again a bit further on. There was an inquiry, but the explanation of his rider was accepted. Cartel ini was prominent most of the way, but was tiring at the finish, while Juan faded out a. long wav from home. San Sebastian cut on inglorious figure, and he appears to have quite lost form.

A field of eight took part in the Waihao Hack Handicap. Nunnerant, Blazes and Ca&hman were pretty evenly supported. Paddy’s Hope gained a slight advantage at the start and it served him well, as lie was never caught, winning by three lengths from Nuunerant, who was Arell clear of Little Willie and Cacus, the lastnamed pair finishing strongly. Paddy’s Hope had little previous form to recommend him, and at best he is only a moderate, though he may improve as others of the stock of Markhope have done. Nuunerant showed up better than he did the previous week, but it is understood that he met with trouble in his rare at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting. Evidently this fact was well knoivn. judging by the heavy support he received yesterday. Little Willie came from a long way back to get third. Blazes ran well to the straight, and then collapsed, while Cash-man lasted for only about three furlongs. Red Blaze was a little better backed than Malincourt for the Hunt Club Steeplechase, for which the field numbered seven. Sextette rant off at thfc stand double, followed by Red Blaze, and at the next- fence Prudent Boy lost his rider and Malincourt was then left with a. long lead, and jumping without a mistake he never looked like being beaten. Cremona, closed the gap a bit. but Malincourt won, easily, with Dardanelles a fair third and Fortune Hunter a long Avay back. All chance of a contest disappeared when Red Blaze ran off, as Malincourt. outclassed the other competitors.

For the Morven Welter Handicap j there wore five starters. Grim Joke I was a warm favourite, with Nunuerant second choice. Backers were avcll on the spot, as they led the field home , with Grim .Joke an easy winner. 1 Blazes being a moderate third. Grim Joke has been galloping well lately. | and he may win in better company I earlv in the new season. The Hunters’ Plate< a mile and a half, run on the flat, drew a field of seven. Hereweare and Tnnisfallen divided favouritism. Sherlock made the early running, but Hereweare went to the front about half a mile from home and looked a sure winner. A litle further on, however, be was tack-

led by Little Willie, who went on to win with ridiculous ease. It Avas a very attractive performance, stamping Little Willie as a hunter of a very useful class. He got off badly, and at one? stage La appeared to be hopelessly out of it, but over the last part lie smothered his opponent?. He is by Penates, a great galloper under big weights, from Jessie I /©Avars, so that he is a half brother to Michael a, Avhich is breeding above the average hunter class. Hereweare ran a good race, and he b6at the others very easily. HANDICAPS. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. The following handicaps have been declared bv Mr .T. E. Henry?:— TALLY-HO STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP,
