Republicans ambushed the funeral of a Free State soldier who had been killed in a street in Gort (County Galway). The funeral, which was attended by the parents of deceased and several unarmed comrades, was attacked on the way to Spiddal, the ambushers firing from both sides of the road. Commandant Rooney was killed. One car was overturned in a ditch and several unarmed Free State troops were taken prisoner. The funeral car broke through the ambush, picking up the dead commandant, and reached Galway. Free State troops are now pursuing the Irregulars, who still hold their prisoners.
