THE RUGBY CAME. SOUTH r. NORTH. I j With a view to picking: a combined conn- : ; try team to play Canterbury at Christ- , : church uext Wednesday, a match play- j ed yesterday at Lancaster Park between i country teams selected from South Canter- ' bury, hh far as Ashburton, and North Can- j terbury. The game was ragged in the ex- j treme. and the. forward work was fumbling ! and uncertain, without much backing up in loose play. There were good individual 1 players on both sides, but- none who could , hope for inclusion in a- Canterbury team j on the day's play, barring M. L. Page and [ Henderson. There was no score until right j on the call of time, when North scored a • try. which was unconverted. The teams were as follow: — SOUTH. Full-back—-C. Stills (Ashburton). Three-Quarters —A. Wright (Ashburton), J. Horgau (Ashburton), H. Dailey (Ellesmere). . Five-eighths—S. Maxwell (Ashburton) and S. Mills (Ellesmere). Half—W. Dailey (Ellesmere). Forwards—B. C- Childs (Ellesmere), wing, E. Thomas (Ashburton) and C. Wilcocks (Peninsula). A. Hudson (Ellesmere), look. M. Daly (Ashburton), K. Waghorn (Peninsula). G. Robinson (Peninsula) and J. Dennehy (Ashburton). NORTH. Full-back—E. Smith (Hnrunui). Three-quarters—N. Doreen (Malvern), Young (North lCanterbury), Barnes (Humnut). Five-eighths—M. L. Page (Malvern;, Q. A. Wright (Malvern). Half-back —Stubberfleld (Hnrunui). Forwards—Quigley, wing (North Canterbury), A. Giffney (Malvern), Bevan (Hurnnui), K, Henderson fNorth Canterbury). Burke (North Canterbury). Free (North Canterbury), J. Beil (Malvern) and J. A. Fraser (Malvern). North had a good deal tho better of the early play, as the half-back got the ball away, and M. L. Page, last year's High School half-back, playing first five-eighths, wits whipping the ball out to hia threequarters. Wright and Young, however, were not handling well in support. The northern forwards, who included Henderson. one of the Canterbury team that beat South Africa, were going better than the southern men. The brightest passing rush in the first, quarter, however, was instituted for Pouth by W. Dailey, another exHigh School half, who gathered the ball cleverly and sent it out to the centre, who threw away a- good opening by passing too eoon, and Wright, made matters worse by knocking on. North were kept out by clean work by Stills, the full-back. Just on half-time the northern wing threequarter, had a pot that narrowly missed. North attacked early in the second spell, and Stills marred a good performance by speculating- in his own twenty-five, and the rebound should have let the northern forwards over, but they all overran it,. Then Page had a close, shot from a penalty, but play went i back to the North line, and W. Dailey, who was temporarily second five-eighths, carried play right on to the line, but free kicks slowed the game up. Cleaner handling bv the backs at last, made the play a bit livelier, and an attack initiated by Page was ca.rricd on strongly by Doreen, who ran into a bunch six yards from tho line. Pncre had another "close penaltv phot. Play went back again, and Smith saved his side with a- neat mark. South were now getting the ball regularly in the scrums, but could not do much with it.. Finally a northern attack was launched by Stubberfleld. Page out-manoeuvred the opposition by taking a neat pass on the unexpected side, and sent the ball in again, ft wa« handled bv half a doren other?, who all had a chance to score, and Free came up from nowhere for a long-delayed was immediately sounded, with the soore:— North 8 South 0 Mr L.
