Mr and Mrs Bernard Tripp, accompanied by Mrs Huy the Eliot, have loft on a holiday visit to Sydney. Miss Dot Cook went up to Kaikoura yesterday to look after her brother who lias been taken ill, and is at Mr and Mrs Willie Bulien's. Mrs F. W. Robinson (Papanui Road) goes to Port Levy to-morrow to spend the week-end with her daughter. Mrs J ust in Westenra. Mr and Mrs J. R. Say well (Greymouth), who have been visiting friends in the south, returned to Christchurch yesterday, and are putting up at the Clarendon. Miss Minnie Roberts (Ashburton), who has been spending some days with Miss Olive Stracbey, went on to Sumner vesterday, and is staying with Mrs L. G. Wright. The engagement is announced of Miss Ethel Gough, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs C. D. Gough, of Stratford Street. FendaJton, to Mr Wilfrid Owen, fourth son of Mr and Mrs H. Owen, of Matai Street, Riccarton. Mrs Hcnderson-Begg, who, with Dr Eleanor Baker and Miss Bovrden, lias been on a trip to the Coast and the Franz .Joseph Glacier, returned home this week- The ladies had very good weather, with the exception of three days rain, when the river rose, and they were imprisoned on the other side. They thoroughly enjoyed their trip A social was held in St Luke's schoolroom on Tuesday evening by tlie parishioners. A musical programme of exceptional merit was given. Tht* following contributed :—Mrs Harry Elwood and Mr Sidney Thrower (solos and joint accompanists), Mrs Arthur Sneesby (songs). Mr Barker (violin solos). Mr Scott. Mrs XX oodward, Mise Anthony and Mr Baker also contributing to the programme. An enjovable dance followed. Last Saturday evening a surprise party organised bv Miss G. Cordner and Mr R. Jones visited the home of Mr and Mrs Lanyon, 35. Percy Street. Linwood. The evening wa,s spent m singing, games and competitions. The music was supplied by Miss M. Lang. Those present were :—Misses M. Phillips. V. Jones. K. Ward. G. Cordner, S'. Scott, M. Rugg. I. O'Connor, M. Mrs Cox Messrs Macdonald, Oooseman. N. and H. Alston. R. Al’Cailum. R. Jones. M- Anderson and S. Pass.

On Tuesday evening Aliss Ruby Luff entertained a number of friends at her home in King Street. Sydenham, on the occasion of her thirteenth birthday. V pleasant erenincr was spent in playing games, and several of the guests con tributed items. Among those present were :—Misses Rubv Luff. Muriel Rautin, Joyce Staff. Thelma Smith, Joycie Lyes, Florrie Howarth, Hazel Cameron. J la Mortlock, Fanny Fineran and Nellie Lawrence. After supper three cheers were given for the hostess, and the singing of 11 For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow ” brought to a close an enjov able evening. The girls of the Y.W.C.A. Hostel gave a supper party on Tuesday night in Honour of Miss Flo. Watkinson, who ri relinquishing her duties at the hostel in view of her approaching marriage. Miss Watkinson was the .recipient of an aluminium tea kettle, presented with warm good wishes from the girls or the house. A casserole in a silver serving-dish was the gift of the Board of Directors. Airs Robert Malcolm, convener of the Hbstel Committee, expressing the board's appreciation of Miss Watkinson's three years £ faithful service in the hostel. Miss Watkinson received an ovation on rising to express her thanks, admitting that her regrets at leaving her happy post were tempered by the thought of happy future surroundings, in which the hostel girls would find a- kettle always “on the boil ” when they should drop r» for a cup of tea. Miss Ella Marshall, St Albans, left last night on an extended visit to AucklandThe quarterly inspection of the Christchurch Nursing Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade by the District Superintendent took place m Monday evening. The officers of the corps staff were present. After the in spection the members were put through various rests in first aid work and heelmaking. It was announced that the competitions for the inter district cup for first aid. home nursing and transport. the district cups for first aid (including transport) and home nursing, tlie corps cup for first aid, transport and home nursing and the association mp. would take place on Labour Day The last mentioned cup has recentlv been presented bv the St John Ambulance- Association in recognition of the services rendered by the divisions during the canvass of the city and suburbs for funds. At the previous meeting the Corps Superintendent gave instruction in transport work, .followed by a talk o?i the resuscitation test, which had been given a short time ago to each of the divisions. The annual dance of the Xgaio Hockey Club was held in the Dorothy Tea Rooms on Saturday night. There were about rixty couples present, including members of the Hinemoa Hockey Club and friends from Kaiapoi. Messrs E. Lord and W. Wiseman were the AI C.’s.
