TO-DAY’S CASES. CHRISTCHURCH, (Before Mr E. I>. Mosley, S.M.) DRUNKEN NESS. '* I rna-ke a* practice of making you people pay for your night’s board and lodgings.’’ said the Magistrate, when a, .statutory first offender offered io take out a prohibition order against himself. Accused was convicted and fined 10s. in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Jean Millard alias Aubrey, alias Rurcb. a second offender, wae fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. AFTER A BIRTHDAY PARTY. A theft which took place after a birthday party led to the. appearance of Thomas Leonard Powell in Court. Powell was charged that on June 6, 1922. n.t Papanui, he stole three, vases, a. salad bowl and a spoon and fork, of a total value of £6, the property of James Berryman. Accused pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Cameron said that a birthday party was held at Berryman’s house on June 6. Accused, who committed the theft under the influence of liquor, sold the goods to a secondhand dealer for 15s. He had been before the Court before, charged with the theft of meat from a safe at an hotel at Kaikoura. He was a good worker, and drink seemed to be his only trouble. Asked if he bad anything to say accused replied that he was very sorry for what had happeneed. “ I hope and trust you will put a little faith in me and allow me to return to mv work.' he addeed. Accused was convicted, and placed on probation for twelve months. Conditions of his probation were that he should take out a prohibition order against himself, and also refund forthwith 15s to the second-hand dealer. BREACHES OF BY-LAWS. For cycling by night without lights Ernest Robert Barron, Charles Bergamini } John Herbert Burns, Kenneth Brunsden, Charles de la Oour. Ralph Drayton, David Downie. Leslie Francis Foster, Alfred Gillies, Robert M’Chi re, Thomas Mason, Selwyn George Maynard, David Morton, Neil Mayer and Frederick Ruthberg were each fined 10s and costs, and Wilfred Howard was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 7s, and Albert Herbert Myers was convicted and discharged. For riding their bicycles on the footpath, Herbert Sherwood was fined 10s and costs, and William H. Edgecombe was ordered to pay costs. For allowing their chimneys to catch fire, John Adamson Borthwick, Joseph Potts. Mary Taylor and H. L. Widdowson were each fined os and costs. Father Francis Kerley and C. H. Ensor were each fined 10s and costs for leaving motor-cars unattended for a longer period than fifteen minutes. Charles Norman R.ossi ter was fined 20s and costs for driving a motor-car in Colombo Street between the kerbing and a standing tram car. Charles Leach (Mr F. W. Johnston), \va« lined £2 and costs for driving a motor-car in n manner dangerous to the public.
