THE GERMAN MARK.

The depreciation of the German mark is one of the important features of recent cable news*. It is not sur prising that Allied Chancelleries are deeply concerned, and that there is some acute anxiety as to the position of affairs, political and financial, in Germany. The exchange values of the mark from the beginning of June down to July 7 were as follow:

On June 26 the exchange closed a b 1520, but the mark had recovered from 1590, to which figure it had depreciated on the assassination of D* Rathenau. The disturbed state of the country is exceedingly disquieting, and ix will be interesting to learn if the influences at the back of the depreciation are political, commercial or financial The constant rumours of Monarchist plots lend some colour to the assumption that revolution is in the air. The Silesian trouble is a. comparatively small affair, but it may have important results if an amicable settlement is not concluded. The most probable explanation, however, is that the collapse has been engineered to postpone ui avoid the reparations payments to France. Pleas of impending bankruptcy have been made on previous occasions, but they have not succeede i in bonding France’s resolution to collect her dues.
