OHERR CHAT Otago Club has a particularly strong team this year. In the recent maton against Wellington Mr J. Dunlop defeated Mr Mason convincingly. again demonstrating his exceptional ability aa a chess expert. Auckland defeated Nelson by seven games to five in the recent match by telegraph. The chesp enthusiasts of Western Eng- j land held, during the Easter holidays, a ■ congress at Weston-super-Mare, which proved a wonderful success. Both, the Continental masters, G. Maroozy and B Ko6tics took part, as did aleo the British champion, Yates, and Sir God rare Thomas, the champion of the City- of London Chess Club, and yet the final winner was not amongst these. The veteran -T. 11. Blakv, who began his serious chess at the meeting of the Counties Chess Association in 1881, carried off premier honours. He has. of course, always been rega-tdod as one of England's strongest amateurs, hut on this occasion he proved invincible, winning five games and drawing four, there- j by scoring 7. G.
