THE TURKISH INQUIRY.

Despite previous reports to the contrary, the Secretary of State, Mr C. E. Hughes, has announced that, the United States is prepared to jdin in the investigations into Turkish atrocities in Anatolia, as proposed by Great Britain, France and Italy. The United States has also suggested that a separate commission be formed to investigate Turkish counter charges against! Greeks and Armenians, and that the tw T o commissions unite in making a comprehensive report on the entire situation in Asia Minor- Air Hughes stipulates that the United States assumes no further obligation and enters on no commitment. Her purpose in participating in the investigation is to enable her to determine her future policy in relation to the authorities concerned.
