JUSTICES OF THE PEACE

PATRIOTIC SOCIAL, *

A patriotic, social of members of th© Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association, held in the Jeilicoe Hall on Saturday evening. Mas well attended by members and their lady friends. Mr H. Holland (president) was in the chain and on th© platform with him were the Hon G. W. Russell, Mr S. E. M’Carthy, formerly senior stipendiary magistrate in Christchurch, and Mr J. J. Dougall. The chairman welcomed recently appointed Justices of the Peace. He said that th© association was making very satisfactory progress. A similar association had been formed in Wellington, and another'one Mas being formed with it© headquarters in New Plymouth. He believed that the movement- would extend throughout the country, and that it would result in the formation of a Dominion organisation. He emphasised the fact that the first plank of the Canterbury Association’s platform is Joyalty to the King and the Constitution.

During the evening Mr Dougall gave an address on “ Imperial Loyalty/’ Songs were sung by Miss Dyer (“ If Thou Wert Blind ” and “My Dear Soul,”) Mr W. H. Prescott (“ Long Live the King,”) Mr T. D. Williams (“ Land of Hope and Glory ” and “ Yrornesd.” a Welsh song), Mr F. C. Penfold (“ The Trumpeter,”) and Messrs Prescott and Penfold (“ Flow Gently Deva.”) Miss M’Cruer, of Rangiora. recited “ The Pride of Battery B.” The accompanists were Airs F. C- Penfold, Airs W. H. Prescott, and Mr A. H. Owen. The musical programme was arranged by Air Penfold. Votes of thanks Mere passed to the performers on the motion of ATr Russell, seconded by Air M’Carthy.
