Hannan and " Jumbo ” Wells, for a purse of £2OO, subscribed by Pioton residents, and the championship of New Zealand, was decided a.t Picton this morning. After going about a mile and a half the slide of Wells’s boat carried awav. the accident putting: him completely out of the race. The oouree whs three miles and a- quarter. The weather was very wet-, but the sea was calm. The men got. away well together. but Hsnna.n gradually worked to the front, and after they had gone a mile and a half be was leading by a length and a half ' At this stage Wells intimated that, his slide had broken, and thereafter he took no part in the race. The time wo.s 21min 14sec.
