BIRTHDAY HONOURS.

DOMINION RECIPIENTS. His Excellency the Governor-General announces that his Majesty has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of his birthday, to confer the following honours in recognition of distinguished services : K.B.E. HON DR POM A RE, Mir lister representing the Native race and Minister in charge of the Cook and other Islands Administration. KNIGHT BACHELOR. HON W. C. F. CARNCROSS, Speaker of the Legislative Council. C.M.G. MR JOSEPH FIRTH, formerly head master of "Wellington College. 1.5.0. AIR JOHN DONOVAN, Ox-Commis-sioner of Police. SIR MATH POMARE. Tli© Hon Sir Maui Pomare was born in Taranaki in 1875. and was educated at the Christchurch Boys' High School and Te Ant© College. He decided to study for medicine, and took his degree in Chicago. In 1901 he was appointed Health Officer by the Government, for duty among the Maoris. In 1912 he successfully contested the seat for the Western Maori district, and ever since then he has been a member of the Executive Council representing the Native race. He has been also Minister in Charge of the Cook Islands. In recognition of his work during the late war the Order of the C.M.G. was conferred upon him in 1920. STR WALTER CARNCROSS. The Hon Sir Walter Gamcross is well known throughout the country, and has been connected with New Zealand politics and journalism for a great number of years. He represented the Taieri district in the House of Representatives for eleven years, retiring in 1902. He was called to the Legislative Council in 1908. and was appointed Speaker of the Council a little over three ye«ars ago. MR J. P. FIRTH. Air Joseph Firth, C.M.G., is a wellknown Now Zealand educationalist, and was for many years head master of Wellington College, retiring at the end of 1920. Ho was educated at Nelson College, and took his Bachelor of Arts degree at * Canterbury College in 1889. He baa served on the staffs of Nelson College and Christ’s College prior to liis appointment as principal of Wellington College. MR J. O’DONOVAN. Air John O’Donovan is the recently retired Commissioner of New Zealand Police. Ho has had a distinguished career in the force, and served there for over forty years. During the visit of the Prince of Wales, Air O’Donovan was responsible for all police arrangements, and in recognition of his services he was made a member of the Royal Victorian Order. SCOUTS’ CELEBR ATION. The Canterbury Scouts paraded under the Provincial Commissioner (Mr G. Lancaster) at King Edward Barracks this morning to celebrate the King’s birthday. There was a good muster, and after the ceremony of saluting the flag, the parade was addressed on the subject of '■ Loyalty ” by Brigadier General A. W. Andrew. After this the annual Fir© Drill Competition for the Fuller Fire Flag was held, and resulted as follows: New Brighton A (penalty 2 secs) 9a points 1. Time: 28 1-5 secs. New Brighton 8 points 2. Time : 31 1-5 secs. Also oompeied:—Sydenham. Mr W. Juriss was judge.
