ARREST AT KAIKOURA

WELLINGTON, June 1
When he stepped off the ferry steamer Mararoa this morning, a man named John Walkington Smyth was met by Detective-Sergeant Andrews and informed that he oould consider himself under arrest on a charge of arson, the allegation being that he had set fire to a building at Kaikoura on May 5. Smyth was taken to the police station, and a couple of hours later he appeared before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court-
Chief Detective Kemp, who represented the police, asked that accused should be remanded in custody to appear at Christchurch to-morrow morning. He said that he would oppose bail.
