Acceptances for the first day of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter mooting will* close at noon on Monday. The Riccarton trainer, S. Trilford, will have no horses racing at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next week. It will be the first time, for many years, that he has missed the fixture, at which he has frequently been represented by winners of jumping even tsM. Duggan will leave for Wingatui on Monday with Sonny, who will be a competitor on the .second arid third days of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. Falstaff lias been shaping well lately over the schooling hurdles at Riccarton. Ho is engaged in hurdle races at the Dunedin meeting next week and lie looks like performing with credit.

Mazarna showed such a strong dislike for the schooling hurdles at Riccarton when tried over them last winter that he dropped out of the jumping brigade. S. Trilford lias never despaired. however, that Mazama would in time bo converted into a hurdler Ho has recently schooled the King's j Guest gelding on his own property, ! where ho lias shaped well, and ho con- ! templates trying him out again at 1 Riccarton shortly. 1 Vice-Regal is to be sent home to his | owner. An operation for throat troubles i will be followed by a long spell, after : which he will return to S. Trilford’s | stable, to lie tried again as a jumper. H. Macdonald has just broken in a yearling gelding by Roniform from Lady Stewart, by Bezonian fron\ the Seaton Del aval mare. Sister Frances. The three-year-olds I>istant Shot and Giantliiller have rejoined Cutts

Brothers’ active team, and are getting through easy tasks in preparation for next season’s racing. [ Chinatown has not done well lately / and R. Longley has decided to turn him out for a good spell. The pacer Prince Lyons looks none the worse for his racing at Now Brighton last week and lie is working freely under E. Berry's charge at Addington. The pacer Tobermory is at present in the paddock having a spell, and ho will not bo trained again till the spring. The pacer Colchester has not come on as well as was expected of him after the form he showed early in his career, but he now pacing well at Ad dington under E. Berry's care. One of the most improved pacers that has raced during the season now drawing to a close is Brent Junior When he was taken in hand by I). Withers, less than twelve months ago, ho looked almost a hopeless proposition as a stake earner, in addition to being a very troublesome customer in harness. He gradually improved until he became quite useful in his class. At present Brent Junior is having a well deserved spell. Silver Locanda looks quite at her best now and she is getting through her tasks on the training track in a j highly satisfactory manner. j W. J Mori and has worked a good ' deal of improvement with his maiden | pacer Country Boy and it should riot be long before he gets a return for liis. i work. Willie Lincoln is still one of F. Berry’s active brigade at Addington and lie looks bright and well. The pacer Lady Joan has not done much work since her success at Addington at Easter but she is likely to be speeded up shortly. E. Carlyon intends bringing his geld ing by Great Audubon—D.T.C. in from j the paddock and jogging him during j the winter months, so as to bo ready j for wo-rk in the earlv spring. ! The trotter Koraki looks very well ! .and ho is being worked by A. Cox in j harness. # # j The trotter Carbinoa is being kept : steadily at work at Addington and she , is doing all that is asked of her. Dolly J Dillon, in the same stable, is doing easier work. i F. Holmes is working away with | Trix Pointer and Sherwood. The former j is not likely to be ready for a two mile j journey but she mav race well over i a shorter course. Sherwood comes to i hand much faster than his stable comj panion and tile black gelding may race j well at Canterbury Park next week. j The trotter Proud Ata is getting I through bis training work at Addingj t-on quite satisfactorily. This should | be a more than useful horse next seaj The Auckland owned pacing mare. ! Oueon Pirate, has been sold to go to j Victoria. TTk> annual meeting of the TToro--1 rata. Racing Club will be held at Hororata on Thursday. June 8. A few years ago the Canterbury Jockey Clnb fixed the maximum weight to be carried in the Grand National Steeplechase at 12st 71b, the Rules of Racing at that time providing for .a : 9st 71b minimum. The minimum has ; Alice been reduced to 9st, so that un los-i the maximum is altered the ionweights will in future be more harshly treated than was formerly the cos©.

The petitions in favour of the relicensing of bookmakers in New Zealand will be presented to Parliament during next session. It is expected that they will contain nearly a hundred thousand signatures. The Auckland cross-country horses. No Surrender and Koura, both of whom are receiving their preparation at the hands of J. Williamson, are standing up to. their work in most satisfactory style, and both have acquitted themselves admirably in their schooling efforts over the steeplechase course. Ijocliclla is under a. cloud at present, as a result of injuries he received early this week when schooling at Ellerslie. Mr J. Bull’s horses are expected to show up well in the Great Northern Hurdle Handicap and the Great Northern Steeplechase at the Auckland Racing Chib’s meeting. According to northern reports, Omahu and Ngata and the two Omabus are particularly ix» pular combinations with double backers. Alteration has been a much discussed candidate for the Great Northern Hurdle Handicap since he finished third in the Century Hurdle Handicap The general impression Is that he will be benefited by his race at Wanganui and that the extra distance at Kllerslie will suit him. Nothing succeeds like success. The Trentham trainer, A. Goodman, has been advised by Mr Fred Hall, of Gisborne, that he will send him two more horses as soon as ho is prepared for them. Mr W. Smart has also placed his recent purchase in Goodman’s stable. J. H. Jefferd has returned from Sydney, and has again put liis team into work. Moat likely Gasbag and Grotesque will l>e nominated for the Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps, to be run at the spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Club. The well-known North Island trainer F. Cress has again been compelled to enter the Sanatorium at Waipukurau. The Wairarapa owner, Mr A. M’Donald, was taken ill after the Wanganui meeting, and lie is at present undergoing treatment at Rotorua.

In the Autumn Steeplechase, throe miles, at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting last month, Thiganthu (9 10) ran first and Old Gold (11.2) second. In tlie Great Northern thev are both on the 9.0 mark. Old Gold, who is favourably treated, is not a novice at the business, having won at Otaki last J u licit is probable that the Hastings trained gelding Kohu, by Espartero—Te Puia, will be shipped to Melbourne at the conclusion of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting. Kohu has been nominated lor the Victorian Grand National Steeplechase. A North Island writer states that the owner of Passin’ Through has received advice from the New Zealand Racing Conference that clubs had been advised of the decision of the Feilding Club not to accept the nomination of the horse, but as against this he has received a certificate from Mr C- O’Connor stating that Passin’ Through was perfectly tractable at the post, and he was prepared to start him at any time.
