CHRISTCHURCH. TO-DAY'S CASES. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M.). DRUNKENNESS. A statutory first offender who did not appear, was fined the amount of his bail. 20s. A MEAN THEFT. Samuel Arlow, 47 years of age, was charged that on May 16, 1922, at Christchurch, ho stole £6 tho property of Robert Gibson. Accused pleaded guiltyChief Detective Cameron said that accused and complainant had stayed at Cunningham’s boardinghouse, Moorhouso Avenue. Accused was being turned out of the place because he had no money to pay for his board when complainant offered to pay for him. After tea complainant went to his bedroom and lay down. Accused was lying down on a bed in the same room. Complainant fell asleep and when he woko up ho missed his pocket wallet. After his arrest accused made a statement admitting the theft. The Chief Detective pointed out that if acoused had not admitted the theft it would have been difficult to prove it against liim. The Magistrate said the theft was a mean one. Accused had stolen from a man who had helped him. Accused would l>e sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour, “ I have taken into consideration the fact that ho pleaded guilty,” the Magistrate added. CIVIL BUSINESS. (Undefended Oases). TENEMENT CASES. M. Moss (Mr Twynehain) proceeded against Joseph Farquhar Murphy 7 (Mr S. E. McCarthy) for the possession of a tenement. After hearing evidence the Magistrate' made an order that possession should be given on or before Juno 12. Judgment was also given for rent amounting to £8 los. Mary J. Carpenter (Mr J. R. Cunningham) proceeded against Frederick C Knowles (Mr W. F. Tracey) for possession of a tenement and rent to date. An order was made that possession should be given on or before June 5, and judgment was given for rent amounting to £32 6s, together with costs. CLAIM FOR WORK IX>NE. H. Gurdk-r (Mr W. F. Tracey) contractor of Christchurch, claimed from J. Oogar (Mr T. W. Rowe) of 13 Grafton Street, Woolston, and William J. Reynolds a sum of £46 for work done by plaintiff for defendants during the month of November 1921.

(Before Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M.) Charges against Martha Agnes Grigg for having assaulted Lillian Hockey and Lilly Plaskett, and with threatening ,o shoot them with a revolver, were further adjourned to be heard in Christchurch on Wednesday. MAINTENANCE CASES. William N. M’Millan was charged with failing to comply with an order ! to pay £3 per week towards the maintenance of his wile and live cliildrea, being £53 in arrears. Defendant was granted an adjournment till next Court day. Arthur Dawson was charged with having failed to obey an order to pay 10s per week towards the maintenance of his illegitimate child and confinement expenses, being £2B 10s in arrears to May 1. Defendant, who is only a lad of fifteen years, stated that he had been earning £2 5s per week, out of which he paid 17s 6d per week as board. The Magistrate said defendant was evidently ignoring the order, and he would be sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, the warrant to bo suspended while 10s was paid regularly with 10s instalment of arrears. Arthur Quinn (Mr van Asch) was proceeded against by his wife, Winifred Quinn, for the maintenance of herself and three children. Complainant stated that, since their marriage seven years ago, her husband : had given her only £4 in cash. The Magistrate: A record, surely. f An order was made for the payment of £1 for the wife and 10a for each of the children. CIVIL CASES. C. Gudex (Mr lvippenberger) claimed from E. Rowe (Mr van Asch) £33 10s 9d, being £25 damages for loss of sheep and £8 lOs 9d, value of fittings belonging to a water servioe. Judgment was given for Is damages, and costs only on the £8 10s 9d, a total of 17s. R. J. Taylor (Mr Kippenberger) claimed £5 10s from W. M. Taituha (Mr Corcoran). Judgment was given for the amount with costs. On a judgment summons claim by M. Leech (Mr Kippenberger) against W. M Donald for £5 Is 9d, an order was made for payment within five days, in default of five days’ imprisonment. J udgment by default was given in the following cases:—E. B. P. Brown (Mr van Asch) v. I>. M. CTighton, £lB 5s 7d, with costs £2 13s; Ivory’s, Ltd., v. R- V. Geddis, £lB. costs £2 ss; same v. W. Elder, £lO 14s lOd, costs £1 15s; F. A.. Loffhagen (Mr van Asch) v. W. M’Donald, £2 7s, costs £1 3s 6d.
