SERIOUS FIRE AT KAKAHI.
(Pbr Pa jess A«soci avion. ) TAUMARUNUI, Mjy 18 A disastrous fire broke out early this morning at Kakahi. The fire which started in E. O’Malley’s boarding house (owned by Miss Harrold, of Auckland) next caught Endres’s general store and then spread to the public hall. After the lire had a substantial hold on the hall, a small empty shop owned by H. Fraser was knocked to pieces by the residents. This proved a gap over which the fire could not leap to Everybody’s Theatre and a shop belonging to Fraser, the only buildings left standing in the main, street of Kakahi, There is no fire brigade at Kakahi, and the residents worked strenuously with buckets to suppress the conflagration. Had there been a wind all the buildings in the street undoubtedly would have been wiped out. The insurances are not available. Kakahi. 184 miles south of Auckland by rail, is situated on the Wanganui River, at tbe junction of the Whakapa pa River.
