F Nicoll at the meeting of the New* Zealand Trotting Association last week on the subject of foul driving, have met with general approval in sporting ci'cko The warning was not uttered too «oon. as foul driving, deliberate or accidental, has been all too prevalent various parts of thn Dominion, this season- No good purpose will be served. however, if officials of clubs content themselves with acknowledging the existence of the evil, without adopting strong measures to stamp it out. The subject is ouo whose interest is not confined to the administrators of trotting. as foul riding is equally a blot on the galloping sport at the present time. It was. of course, only a coincidence that the indictment of trotting officials and horsemen was uttered on the eve of the .Ashburton County D-ao-ing Club’s meeting, of which club Mr Nicoll is vice-president. That meeting furnished evidence of the soundness of his complaint, so for as both branches of the sport are concerned. In one of the trotting events there was a good deal of interference, some of it doubt less accidental, but some due to deliberately unfair tactics of the worst kind. Apparently it was done so cleverly as to escape official notice, while the sufferers. as usual, refrained from making any complaints, preferring to await a favourable opportunity for evening up accounts later on in their own way This method of retaliation means, of fours©, a repetition of the offence which the authorities are out. to put a stop to, and it is one which should be discountenanced at once. At the same time, it is a system which has grown up ns a result of inefficient official control. It is small satisfaction to a driver, after being robbed of a race through the unfair tactics of an opponent. to find the offender has escaped notice or. at the worst, has been fined for careless driving. A closer observation of the racing, with a term of disqualification for the first offender who is caught, is the only method of effectively dealing with the growing evil.
