Nominations for the Methven ting; Club’s meeting will close this evening. Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meting are due at noon on Monday. 'Hie Ashburton track was very hard yesterday and it maintained its reputation for fast times. The chief event, of one mile, was run in lrnin 89 l-ssee, while the sprinters reeled off six furlongs in lmin 12 2-osec. Mr R. E. Ha lie v was in good form at the starting barrier at Ashburton yesterday, the fields being got off smartly and in excellent line. ASHBURTON RAGES FIRST DAY. The autumn meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club was commenced yesterday in ideal weather. There was a large attendance. the special train from Christchurch being well patronised, which was not a mattej* for surprise, as the club’s patrons were landed back in the city shortly after six o’clock. The track was very jiard and times were fast, while the day’s racing vras full of interest. Good fields contested most of the events, though in several instances there was a decided tail, in the matter of quality. Racing opened with the Hurdle Handicap. General Retain, Romance and Wild Night were withdrawn, leaving a field of seven. Likelihood wound up a little better favourite than Island, while Vice-Regal and Mandrake were also solidly supported. Vico-Regal, as usual, took charge at the start but he had Pomposa, Island and Wartax in close attendance for half a mile. Then Wartax took second place and a little further on he joined Vice-Regal in the lead. They opened out a big gap going along the back but half a mile from home Vice-Regal drew away again, while Likelihood also headed Wartax. In a fine finish Likelihood gradually wore Vice-Regal down and won by half a length. Wartax came on again in the straight and he was only three lengths away at the finish. Likelihood nas developed into a very use*.ul hurdler. He has a good turn of speed and stays well, so that he should get more money later on in steeplechase events. Vice-Regal was troubled by the distance. though he stayed on rather better than he could at one stage of his career.

Wartax ran a peculiar raCJ, finishing fast, after appearing to he done wth half a mile from home. Island went well in the early stages but bad jumping settled his chance, while Pomposa also fenced wildly. Mandrake was well back in the early stages and came on the scene too lato to have a chanc-e. Innisfallen tailed off all the way. The scratching pen was very busy in connection with the First Hack Welter Handicap, nine horses being withdrawn, leaving a field of seven. Economist was a hot favourite. Starlike being in slightly best demand among the others. Wartone began smartly and led to the straight, with SecTiomist and Starlike handy. When fairly in line for homo Economist ranged alongside Wartone, whom ho beat with ridiculous ease by a length. Winsome Lady, coming from n long way back, was third, just in front of Starlike and Roniform. Economist, who is a well bred three-year-old by Absurd from imported Week End, lias only started twice, having won a fortnight ago at the South Canterbury meeting. He is a rare good galloit r. who may later on stay a bit better than the average Absurd, and even if he does not, he looks certain to get a lot of money in sprint events next season. Wartone, as usual, showed plenty of speed, but she does not stay. Winsome Lady ran a good race, ns she was very slow to get going, but she was travelling at a great rate at the Starlike was a fair tliird but never looked like a winner and it must have been because Emerson had the mount that she was so well backed. Agnola went well for half the journey and then collapsed. Whipping Boy and Kilmoon were withdrawn from the Autumn Handicap, the chief event of the day, leaving six runners. Sunny Loch was served up a strong favourite, carrying nearly twice as much as Castellan, who was second choice. Twinkle was first to show out but he did not last long in front, Deucalion and Mythology going on well clear of Castellan. There was no change till the straight was reached, when Castellan ranged alongside the leaders, Silent King and Sunny Loch being also handy. There appeared to he some l amping, as a result of whch Mythology dropped out. Castellan then drew out and won by a length from Sunny Loch, who just beat Silent King, with Deucalion next. Castellan has been racing very consistently this season, having several good performances to his credit. Like others by Glenapp, he has improved with age and ho may do still better nexo season. He is a brother to Glendower, who was a verv moderate gelding till well on in his career. Sunny Loch seemed unable to go.the T)tco in the early stages and he was a trifle unlucky on reaching tho .straight. At the same time, it looked ns it he had had enough racing for the jitf-.nt, and he mav lx* all the hotter lor a good rest. Silent King ran a sound race and was staying <ll : l the end. Deucalion had every chance, but he ir j beaten a furlong from home. Mythologv was going well til! he met trouble in the straight. Twinkle was outpaced in the early -tngc.s :.nd was in the rear most i.l the way.

The Lagmhor Plate attracted a ficl 1 of twelve, of whom eight were two-year-olus. Contempt vras a strong fn~ i c urito, with Balefire easily best hacked among the others. Martis was. first out, with Balefire, Ardour and Nyanza handy. Balefire soon lost his place, and at the end of a fin long Loves ign and Stream joined the front lot. Martis led into the straight, v nere he was challenged h> Lovesign, but Mortis hung on well, winnng by half a length, with Ardour two lengths away, followed, hy Stream, Ba le fire and Royal Despatch. Martis has more than once shown speed, and he looks as if he would develop into a useful three-year-old, at any rate over short courses. Whether he will stay however remains to be seen. Lovesign who finished second is a two-year-old filly by Nassau, her dam, Formnal, being a, sister to Bon Spec. Like her relative, she can go fast, but she was stopping at the end of the journey yesterday. Ardour ran her best race to date, and she may be useful next- season She is by Gay Lad from Mettle, by Calibre from \Valda, who is a descendant of Oil id a, so she comes from a great staying family. Stream showed speed, but failed to stay. Balefire could not hold his place carlv, but he was running on at the end.' Royal Despatch, after beginning very slowly, was in the rear for a good part of the journey, out he finished very fast. He is hy Olarenceux from Comedy, and looks like; being useful, as ho has not done a great deal of work. The favourite Contempt got off badly and never made any impression on the leaders. The withdrawal of Mythology, Grim Joke. Dutch Courage and High Heels left eight starters for the Fairfield Welter Handicap. Counter stroke was just a. little bettor favourite than Callaghan. Thestius was soon out in front, with a good lead from Counterstroke, who in turn was well clear of the next lot. headed by Lord Ashlea and Rosevcar. while Kiikoe was last. Thestius tired in the straight, and Combustible had his measure a hundred yards from the post, but he had to he shaken up to win by a head from Kilkee, who finished wth a great run. Counterstroke lias done a good deal of racing, without much success. He is a solid customer in his class, hut many removes from being a good one. The field he*- beat yesterday could hy no stretch of imaginaion be regarded as more than moderate. The only horse in the field with pretensions to decent class was Callaghan, but this good-looking Englishman, though possessing plenty of speed, can rarely be induced to display it in a race. Three of the field. Rcsevear, Lord Ashlea and Orange Mart have done all their recent racing on the West Coast. Kerb, Auckland. Dame Straitlace, Winsome Lady and Quarrelsome were withdrawn from the Longbeaoli Handicap, leaving a field of nine. Lord Leslie was a warm favourite, with Jazz and Madam Chiron best backed among the others. Madam Chiron was smartest out. but Lord Leslie headed her after going a furlong. From that point the result was never in doubt. Lord Leslie winning very easily by three lengths, while Madam Chiron held second place to the end, finishing a length in front of Weird and Black Head. The winner, lxird Leslie, has not done much racing, but he lias three wins and a second to his credit during the last few weeks. Ho is not a goodlooker, but ho has the gift of galloping, and he will win in much better company before long. So far ho has not been tried better than six furlongs, but on breeding lines there ia no reason why he should not stay. Madam Chiron ran a solid race and she has developed into quite a useful performer in hack company, though she may never get much further. Weird, who won His first race a fortnight ago at South Canterbury, again 7>erformed well and he may got some more money very soon. The Wellington owned Blackhead finished well, after beginning rather slowly. Jazz got out smartly but he collapsed a long way from home. This speedy galloper is a most disappointng horse in a race.

Sungloam cut up badly, being near the rear all the way.

The concluding event, the Grove Farm Handicap, attracted a field of eight, Tatau Tatau, Triboulet and Pyjama being withdrawn. It was a great betting race between three. Roseday, Will Oakland and Limelight winding up in that order. Bon Spec and Will Oakland set a solid pace for two furlongs, when Bon Spec was steadied. Will Oakland going on from Weary Willie. Several others joined in at the entrance to the straight and Lr.r.olight. finishing with a brilliant run, won decisively from Bon Spec, who came on again in the straight. Counter Attack, Weary Willie, Roseday and Battle Scene followed in close order. Limelight s win was well earned, as she has raced with a good deal of bad luck lately. She is an exceptionally speedy filly and under a light weight she is liable to score in any sprint company next season. Bred by her owner, Mr O. G. Dalgety, she Is by Solferino from Warstep’s sister, Stardancer, herself a fine galloper, who went to the .stud early. Limelight therefore ha a a lot to recommend her and she should do a lot more winning yet. Bon Spec, handled to great advantage by F. C. Porter, finished on better than usual. The West Coaster, Counter Attack, was going 011 in good style at the end and 110 may pick up a stake lieforo he returns home. Weary Willie ran a good race and it is a great pity this fine galloper is touched in the wind. Roseday and Battle Scene were slow to begin, though they were no worse off in this respect than Limelight. TV ill Oakland let his admirers down very badly. He got out w'eli hut had run himself out a furlong from home. I'll ere were fourteen starters for the Selma Trot Handicap, three of them being two-year-olds and six a year older. Emmet and Bonny Logan were the popular fancies, though Dusky Boy and "Wicklow Boy also had a good number of supporters. Logan Chief began smartly and soon opened up a big gap from the rest of the field, in which Swift Pointer and Bonny Logan were prominent early, being joined later by Dusky Boy and Wicklow Boy. with Emmet also handy. Logan Chief tired in the run home and in an exciting finish Wicklow Boy last ed long enough to win by a head from Emmet, who came with a brilliant run over the last furlong. Logan Chief was close up third, just clear of Dusky Boy, with the others strung out. The winner is a four-year-old by Copa do Oto. his dam, Innisfail, by Rothschild- -Ruahine. being a member of the family from which Mr .T. Farrell has bred all his winners for some years past. "Wicklow Boy did nob begin too well, and there was a good deal of merit in his performance Emmet was verv unlucky to be beaten. Ho met trouble early and lost a lot of ground before be got going properly. Over the last part of tho

journey ho showed a great burst of speed and ho should soon be among the winners. Ho is by Brent Locanda from Emmeline, so that ho is bred to go fast.

Logan Chief, who fiilod third place, is a well grown three-year-old, by Logan Pointer from Regina 8011, a good Southland performer a few seasons ago The youngster haa plenty of speed and later on he should stay ali right. Dusky Boy did not get out well but once on the way he paced n sound race. Bonny by Logan Pointer from imported Boniiene, is a very promising two-year-old. She was always well placed and looked dangerous to the turn for home, where she met trouble and retired. This filly looks like takix v; high honours. Guy Fawkes, a two-year-old by Harold Dillon from Rose Gauntlet, did not show up prominently, but he is a good looking colt whose turn will come next season. NOMINATIONS DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB.
