SUMNER RIPPLES.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK, [From Opr Correspo.vdevtJ RANNERDALE SOLDIERS. A local effort is being made to raise funds for the Jl.uinerdale Soldiers’ Holiday Account, l>v means of a concert in the Town Hall on .Monday. May 22. Sora-e of the residents have taken the matter up enthusiastically because tliov know how the patients appreciated their recent stay in the borough and because it is hoped that an effort will he made before long to provide a permanent seaside Residence for them. Amongst those asGting with the programme are Miss Gladys Lorrimer, Miss Helen and Miss Frances Hammer- , ton. Miss Peggy Marshal, Miss Joyce j Staff, Mr Bishop. Mr E. L. Gordery j and Mr TV. T. Ward’s orchestra. Mrs -J Reay and Air Owdery, with the help of some of the senior boys of the Bury Street School, are pushing the sale of tickets. RIFLE SHOOTING. At the annual meeting of the Ladies* Miniature Rifle Club the following offi oers were elected: Patron, Airs J Barr; president. Alisa Foster; vice-pre-sident. Airs Barclay: secretary, Air* Glackin; treasurer, Aliss T. Alerric , captain. Miss Koig; vice-captain, MGs O’Connor. The opening takes place on Alondny night. PERSONAL. Airs J. Leithead Aliss E. Leithead. of Dry den Street, left this weeK for Sydney, where they expect to enjoy an extended holiday. Air K. G. Shrimpton has appointed to the staff of the Bury Street School and will take up duties after tb e term holidays. Air and Mrs Norman Barlow have taken up residence in Dryden Street. Aliss D. Hanham, of the Bury Street. School, was farewe'.led bv the staff and scholars of the school on Friday afternoon. The function was of a most cordial nature. Aliss Hanham. who has been connected with the school for over eight years, has earned the good of all with whom she has com© in eon- ! tact. Expressions of regret at the lo«s j of so valuable a teacher were very general and tlie goodwill of the children j towards one who had become popular amongst them were suitably expressed 1 in a handsome gift. Air H- Buttle who has been seriously j indisposed recently, is now making good | progress. j SENIOR CADETS. Although not required to attend par- J ades at present, the senior cadets are t attending voluntary musketry practices and are doing good work. By the time they are read'- to shoot for the Impel* j ial Challenge Shield competition thev i should be in good form. it is hoped, i during the winter, that a scries of I matches will be, arranged with local and J* other rifle clubs. OH ANGT NG 8 A NOS. Along the beach front of Sumner [ Bay the sand seems to have been , “ making ” for sumo time. This is I mobt in evidence at the intersecting street ends where the entrances to the beach have been raised to dunes. Opposite Shag Rock Corner the Now Brighton Spit has now swung right round into the estuary where, at high water a curving beach -may be seen with deeper water on the inner side. The erosion is still home: continued on the seaward side, the whole point having been moulded in a much broader curve. Two things may account for this—the prevailing easterly sweep ot j ■ wind and water, and the presence of : I vegetation to the north west which j hinders the progress of the sand dur- I ing the gales from that quarter. SUMNER SCHOOL COMMITTEE. j At its last Tii-ec-t-in;.:. the. committee decided to raise funds this winter Uy ( another series of socials and concerts. \ It is nropnsrd to follow the successful I scheme adopted lust year, when including a popular one for the ohild-

ren, gave satisfactory results. The matter is in the hands of Mrs F. Barber. Mrs T. AVilson, Mr G. A. Alexander and the headmaster. IMPROVEMENTS. The extension of the electric lighting scheme along Herhcrden Avenue has resulted in a very awkward corner being. much improved. The- grading and the sharp turn at this spot have always made it a, had turn in the dark. When another lamp is placed at the intersection of Campbell Street the. road under the hill will he fairly well lit. A good deal of grading and cleaning has heen done in the Redeliffs streets lately and another section of the main road, that- at the Augusta Street stop, has been tarred and sanded. In Sumner the Campbell Street Bridge has been renewed, and the Scarborough Hill Road improved. The engineer reports that improvements have been effected to the supply pipes from the Rat Island wells. BCR(;ESSES’ ASSOCTATTON. J he Rev AN . MeAra presided over the regular meeting of the Burgesses* Association. The recent rescue made bv Miss P. Watson and Mr F. Stokes was discussed and a resolution carried congratulating those who assisted and requesting the secretary to bring it under the notice of the Royal Humane Society. A very favourable report was received from the Beautifying Association .
