CHRISTCHURCH COMPETITIONS.

SESSIONS OPENED TO-DAY. It is pleasing to note that the 1922 festival of the Christchurch Literary and Musical Competitions Society has attracted a record number of entries. Two hundred more entries than were received last year are recorded for this year's festival, which was commenced in the Choral Hall this morning before a fair attendance. The official opening will take place on Saturday in the Theatre Royal, at 7.45 p.m. Three sections were gone through this morning. The judges are: —Music. Mr Victor Galway, Mur. Bac.. of Dunedin; elocution, Mr Claude Hall, of Melbourne. The official accompanist is Mrs J. H. Cocks, and tile stage manager Mr H. Sweney. To-day's results are:— PIANO SOLO (Reading at Sight). Lady or Gentleman. Piece to be selected by judge. Miss Veronica Ward. 75 points . » ,3 Miss Lynda Scales, 70 points . » .2 Miss Lilia Warner, CO points . . .3 Also played: Misses Nettie Purdue, Mavis Falconer, Muriel Wilson, Gwendoline Thomas. Doris Thorne, Rita Seaton and Ehoda Haugh. The piece set by the judge was an old French dance by Boely (Eighteenth Century). The judge said that the usual fault in reading at sight, was taking the piece too quickly and holding the pedal down. PIANO SOLO. (Reading at Sight). Under Sixteen. Piece to be selected by the judge. Miss Irene Seymour, 75pts . . .1 Miss Ivy Watkins, 73pts . . „ 2 Miss Mia Prestidge, 72pt.s , . S Also played: Misses Maisie McClelland, .Grace Laurenson, Audrey M Qua do ana Ivy Evans. The piece set was “ Rusette." (Monteclair), a Seventeenth Century composition. The judge said that it was considerably easier than the previous section and on the whole it was much better played. There were the 8a mo tendencies to play too fast and keep tho pedal down. Mias M’Quade (Duntroon) and Miss Ivy Evans had scored good marks though they had failed to secure places. VIOLIN SOLO. Under twelve. Own selection. Recalls : Miss Thelma Cusack. “ Mignon.” Master John Partridge, "Romance et Tyrolienne." Miss Freda MoLr, " Romance et Tyrolii«nne." Also played: Misses Rena Neate, Dora Deal and Master Sydney Watts.
