A PROPER PROTEST.
The City Council was on sound ground last evening when it expressed disapproval of the payment of £8 8s to the Employers’ Association for services rendered in the Arbitration Court. The protest led by the Labour members of the council was justified. The council should not knowingly establish a dangerous precedent by giving financial support £0 a partisan body. As was pointed out last evening, such a precedent could be used to justify a future council in sending a. Labour union secretary to represent it before the Arbitration Court. In that case, the protests would come from the members who now support the grant to the Employers’ Association. 'Pbe discussion disclosed one of those “entangling alliances” which should be terminated, and the old practice of the city's authorised officials representing the council at the hearing of disputes should be reverted to.
