Gr eon wood holds a strong hand in the Canterbury ( hampagne Stakes ; in fact, in the absence of Epitaph, who is to race at Auckland at Easter, there is not much serfous opposition in sight. R. J. Mason will leave to-night for Trentham with Gloaming and Pluto, both of whom are in great fettle Gloaming trill be a competitor in the Challenge Stakes on Thursday and provided the ground is hard Vhe race looks pretty good for him. He is ,in the Trentham Gold Cup on the second day but the popular opinion is that he will not take his place in the field. He has never started over two miles vet. and it seeroe at least doubtful if this r?ce will be chosen for Gloaming’s first meeting with Amythas It is more probable that Pluto will be Mr Greenwood’s representative in the Gold Chip, provided be makes a decent show in the St. T/eger on Thursday. Pluto has been working over longer journeys lately and has been shaping very well. H. C’utts is booked for a trip north to-mght, in charge of Winning Hit. Fed FTind and Angelo, who are to race at Trentham this week. AYirming Hit, may be set to chase Gloaming in the C Kalleuge Stakes, while on Saturday be will take on the Trentham GoU Cup. He is in good fettle but hi' form this season suggests that a two mile journey is beyond him. Though ip has two Derby successes to hicredit, be has. collapsed like a non stayer each time he has taken on mile and a hall handicap. Hod Hind and Angelo will contest hack events. Angelo being only engaged on the second day at Trentham- The three horses will go on to Awapuni next week, for the Mannvatu Racing Club’s meeting, where AA inning Hit should be seen to advantage in the Awapuni Gold Cup, run over a mile and a rjuartef • F. p. .Tones is taking Amytlias and Mustard Pot to AVellington to-night anrl at the close of the Trentham fixture, he will continue on to Awapuni for next week's meeting.
